    Default Kayak people ....

Finally decided to buy a kayak, have been looking at them and thinking about it for a while.

Went down to the lake the other day when one of the local shops had a demo day. Sort of fell deeply in like with the Delta 12AR.

    Delta 12AR – Delta Kayaks

Not too big, stable with double chine hull (I assume that is what we would call it) and a nice big open cockpit so there is room for both my legs and Guinness the Wonder Springer Spaniel. ( this is important)

So it turns out the 12AR is sold out and the manufacturer is out of raw material and not expecting to have any boats available before mid-June.

I'm looking for a boat suitable for use on the lakes around here (and maybe in AZ), room for me and the Wonder Spaniel for a few hours at a time - max.

Any other thoughts? recommendations or other things to consider??

My wife and I are looking to replace our double and looking for a couple recreational sit-in kayaks for lakes, rivers and calm ocean.

We currently have a Hurricane Santee 140T and it's a great kayak/company so maybe check out Santee 116 Sport. Looks like you could definitely fit a pooch in there. We got ours local at Charles River Kayak and they're made in the USA.

I recently checked out the Elie Sound 100XE at REI and that might fit the bill for you. Another one I liked there was the Eddyline Sky 10, though the cockpit might be a tad small.

I had a Current Designs Slipstream (British touring kayak) several years back and they're another great company so maybe check out their offerings too.

Are you opposed to a sit-on-top kayak? seems to me that would be more comfortable for paddling with a pooch?

I found a dealer with the 12AR and it is being shipped to me. He also suggested the Wilderness Pungo as having a larger cockpit while still being a "sit in"

    Looking forward to trying it.

AS - If this doesn't work then the sit on top may be a try it out for next year but I think the sit in will be more useful for days I want to go out even without my trusty companion.

Get my pal Alan Gage in Iowa to build you one person - one dog canoe. He does some beautiful work. He and his dog Sadie have done some multi-week unsupported trips into northern Saskatchewan and northern Manitoba in canoes he has made. Let me know if you'd like contact info.

My wife and I went the other way from the beautiful canoe above: Inexpensive route.
We bought a couple of cheap Pelicans about 8 years ago, and I’m glad we did! We’ve used them on open rivers, small very shallow “inches deep”- overgrown streams and the ocean. Because of the plastic contraction, I’ve never worried about scraping up the bottoms, or damaging them while throwing them up on my tall SUV. We’ve loaned them out to friends, my kids, their friends, etc, etc. No water nearby, so they are always being transported by car, and have held up great.
Someday we may get something nice, but the cheap way has so far has worked out very well!

Werner makes really nice kayak paddles. The true weight of a paddle is best measured in the last 1000' feet back to the dock in a headwind.

Necky makes nice boats. My sister-in-law has several*, and they track very nicely and don't feel pudgy in the water at all like some rotomolded boats.

    So, I bought the Delta.

As much fun as I thought it would be, why did I wait so long to buy a kayak??

My son asked at 3pm on Sunday whether we couldn't go for a paddle. Well, you can't say no to that, so assembled the frame halves, chucked them in the van, put it all together in the put-in and tossed the boat in the water. Along the way, my daughter decided she wanted to come along so, no problem, we pulled the seats and made as much room as we could. Put in at the Croton-Harmon train station and paddled up the Croton River up to Silverlake Park and back. About 2.6 nautical miles round trip and maybe 60 minutes from put-in to finish. Not much of a trip, but who doesn't like to paddle with the kids on a sunny Sunday?
