I live in New Hampshire. This means constant political ads, 24/7, on all networks. This year's tactic, and a taste of things to come for the national election? Instill fear. The worst, most vile kind of pandering.
Ohhhh, you big strong men, here to keep me safe from.... something..? You've got my vote!

Assigning a major, multi-week "project" to a 5th grader seems excessive. Maybe I'm completely out of touch with the current educational system.
I wrote a decent sized research paper on Easter Island and the Rapa Nui in early 6th grade. doesn't seem to far off.

You should have waited 15 minutes. I was just about to post this...

I woke up to a dog wetting his bed and spent too long cleaning it up (he's a big dog). Then I get home from work and go through the standard routine. Let them out, feed them and just as I was about to get up to let them out again I find that he shit all over the kitchen and dining room with bonus points for stepping in too. Cleaning that up sucked. But what really bums me out is that it's a stark reminder of how old he's getting. This is a dog that up until the last couple months had maybe 5 accidents in the house. That's over the 12 years I've had him. Lately it's 5 a week.

So, we went to an early movie(10:30am) on a Sunday for "The Big Short". Not many people around. The Star Wars crowd is coming in. Pretty nice theater with full reclining reserved seats. When you pay for your ticket, you choose your seat off of the screen graphic of the whole theater... just like reserving an airline seat. With 10 minutes until showtime, there's just a few seats blocked out, scattered around in the middle. We chose two seats in the back row on the aisle. Nobody around us, because that's what was indicated on the screen. This is nice with none of the "commercials" that you see at later shows. With 5 minutes until showtime another couple comes up the stairs and leaves one seat between us and them. Again, they had to see us occupying our seats on the screen. Whatever. With 1 minute to go, here comes Happy Douchnozzle and plops his ass between us and the other couple. ARE YOU F^&$@$% KIDDING ME?!?. So, he saw the occupied seats on the screen and chose the one seat in the between two blocked out seats. Eight people in the whole 'effin theater. So, he saw that empty box and I guess said to himself, "People love me...... let's have a group movie viewing on Sunday morning." You cannot make it up!

What I'd give to have a "side burrito" with dinner be an acceptable option.

My middle kid got a discipline call home because he and his "friend" Emily were caught hugging after lunch as they separated to head back to class. The principal said they had been warned by the lunch lady and she had no choice but to call since a lunch lady warning didn't work. FFS and Jaysus, don't these folks have more to do than bust 13/14 yo kids for a hug? Tomorrow, I'm dropping off a bag of Hersey Hugs and Kisses for the principal with a note explaining that it's clear she could use some hugs too.

I was really bummed to learn that Alan Rickman had died. People talked about his dramatic roles in the Harry Potter movies and Die Hard. He played a great villain, but my favorite Alan Rickman character was Dr. Lazarus in Galaxy Quest, I love that movie.

If you can't drive in the snow/ice, please don't.

WTF is up with DC this morning. Less than and inch and some ice and it's shut down? Looks like someone forgot to pre-treat the streets.

I've been waiting all week for this.

Last saturday, I decide to go out for a quick spin on the fixed gear. On my way home, as I'm practicing the local sprint finish (read I'm moving along pretty well), some douche buzzes me at about 6 inches. I look up to give him the ol' one finger salute, and what do I see? A offing USTA sticker on the back of his car. Nice. Better yet, this is a 25mph street that is a huge local tourist drive. So, he is just stuck behind the car in front of him anyway.

    Asshat.

I posted in the ride reports thread, but yes DC is a shitshow right now. The driving portion of my commute home took me over 45 minutes to drive 5 miles, picking my streets very carefully to avoid hills, lucky to have a manual transmission and nice heavy front wheel drive car (Jetta Wagon.)
People were all over the roads, spun out etc. This morning, abandoned cars everywhere. I got partway to work and turned around, knowing there were still a ton of treacherous hills ahead of me.

My grump is that while I'm lucky to be able to work from home (and likely will be tomorrow due to the actual blizzard), there are still a stack of papers on my office desk that I'd really like to have with me, had I known what a disaster things were going to be.
    my name is Matt

My old company's new ownership seems way top-heavy. Finding out quickly that the henchwoman in charge of our division (who was hired just prior to our acquisition) has no clue what she's doing -- but no matter what I tell her of my 20 years experience, she hears 'no'. I believe I have 'difficult' checked in my file already. I'm a path of least resistance guy when it comes to drama - just let it go - so stepping back 5 years in technology and practices is the way for now until I can get the eff out of here. The peasants stormed our castle and are using our good crystal to rinse after brushing their teeth.

Positive side, I'm forced into starting that second career I've been hesitant to jump into.

the esplanade along the river (boston side) between BU bridge and River St is closed until March, meaning I take either a super crappy bumpy path on the Cambridge side, or the roads on which I was almost hit twice within 2 blocks this morning. le sigh, bumpy path it is. bike commuting, man.
they repaved a huge part of the path in the fall and that only took a week...what the heck is going to take 3 months?
