Surprised the kids this morning with: "You're not going to school today, we're getting on a plane back to Boston to visit friends." Smiles all around. I get to see some of my friends, too, and I might get one more bottle of Pretty Things before they disappear.

Now, if I could just figure out how to get a bike ride in...

Spent my morning having coffee with a few friends from the old job. They're happy, and the coffee sure was good.

It better be a damned good dishwasher.

A friend just hooked my wife and I up with Gary Clark Jr. tickets for a show in February at a beautiful theater.

Saw the new Star Wars movie with my older daughter last night. Luxury theater with reclining seats. Good times. Soon enough it'll be some other guy sitting next to her in the theater..

My nephew is coming into the city from the wilds of NJ to spend the weekend with us - and he asked if we can do homework!?

    I said okay

after we go to the bike shop, the outdoor store, get a fish sandwich for lunch, maybe try a skate (if they have ice!) at the park, go see photos at MOMA, go to the local Apple nerd store, go to a show, go to a basketball game, eat some dim sum, visit the comic book store, download and watch most of the James Bond movies, download and play video games of his choice, go take photos of people in Union Square, check out all the fashion models and other pretty people wandering around and go eat whatever we can find on the High Line but especially gelato,

    then we can do homework.

Syracuse V Boston? Have you visited Syracuse in February? On the plus side, living 30 minutes outside of Syracuse will expose you to amazing riding opportunities. Living 30 minutes outside of Boston will mean still living in the madness that is the I-95 corridor.

I had an appointment at VA today. My annual wellness check since I use a local doctor with my employer insurance. The clinic called while I was driving the hour it takes to get to there and asked what time I was going to arrive because they were running ahead of schedule. In case you missed that, VA was ahead of schedule. I was in and out before my originally scheduled appointment. I even got a tetanus shot. If you can't remember your last shot, you probably need one, especially if you're like me and do stupid shit with sharp edge tools.

Lived in Syracuse for 4 years already. Met the wife at SU.
Live in Boston currently. Brandeis not far. Did not even apply to Simmons (#9 program) although down the street from where I live.

Most of these programs have been pushed into an asynchronous online format including those mentioned above.

So, if I am going to do grad school online I might as well choose the best program at the best information studies school in the country. And yes, neither my wife nor I have any desire to spend more time in Syracuse. It was fine more than 20 years ago as undergrads but we try to think we have evolved from having attended the #1 party school.

I remember quite vividly the campus visits, acceptance letters, the commitment, orientation, the rides back and forth from breaks...time really does fly. This letter drove the fact home pretty quickly that on 23 May, the young woman that left home almost four years ago will be moving on to another phase of her life and we couldn't be more excited for her.

This was a nice New Year's email:

"Congratulations! It gives me great pleasure to be the first to address you with the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP®) designation! Based upon your examination results, a review of your application and acceptance of your endorsement, the (ISC)2 Board of Directors awards you with the CISSP Certification."

Son flew in from NYC to spend Christmas and New Years with us. He hangs out on the beach all day, taking kiteboarding lessons, talking to the girls, swimming, snorkeling, comes home drinks our beer, eats our food. It's been a great week!

I slapped on a salonpas patch and went for a 16 mile ride, my longest since returning to the bike earlier in the week and the longest for the year. I may do as much as 20 miles tomorrow and might even get a road bike out for the forecasted 58 degrees on Sunday.

Last night my entire family (both daughters) spent the night downtown Seattle to celebrate five years of wedded bliss with my wife. The whole world celebrated with us. Fireworks at midnight on the Space Needle had the 2-year-old transfixed, even with the freezing temperatures.

Nearly 2 months and 6 phone interviews later, I have an excellent new job. I am very lucky to live in Maine, which isn't exactly a center of high-profit industry, and also make an excellent living. I see a new sailboat on the horizon, and me on it! Party time boys.

The Boy got his license this week. I got him a few years old Ford Focus that is underpowered and over-airbagged. I'm out of the kid hauling business for the most part. I also rode 100 miles this week.

Off today (but working Monday) and headed to NJ (and hopefully NYC) to see some friends for the weekend.

Should be able to winter carbo load with real Pizza and real Bagels.
