Resizing engagement ring
My wife's ring needs to be resized from a 4 to a 4.5, and a local jeweler said the process would involve cutting the band and inserting some additional material. Have any of you had this done, and were you satisfied with the results? It's my understanding that some rings can be stretched without cutting, but this jeweler made it sound like that wouldn't be possible with my wife's Tiffany-style four prong setting. Anyone in the know, does this sound right?
Thanks!

Re: Resizing engagement ring
It's possible to bang out a half size, but it depends on a few things like the shape of the band, material, etc. Cutting and adding metal is a standard process, but like anything else, how well it's done is entirely dependent on the bench jeweller. One minor thing to be aware is that not all alloys are created with the identical mix so (if you are talking about yellow or rose gold) the colour of the additional material may not match the rest of the ring perfectly unless you are having the job done by the same people that supplied the original ring: it may be a bit redder or greener depending on the mix. Because the affected area is at the bottom of the shank, it will not be visible unless someone is looking at her palm. Whether that is a big deal depends on the wearer, but I thought you should know.
BTW, "Tiffany-style" is with 6 prongs.
