Re: What in the world were the BMW designers thinking?
Back to the i3...this thing is sweet and a rocket. I'd put it up against nearly anything to 40 mph. However...
What makes it a great city car, taught reflexes, quick steering, rigid body, tight suspension, short wheelbase, make for a lousy ride over freeway expansion joints and irregular pavement in general. As with MotoGP bikes that were found to be too stiff due to their carbon frames, so too this i3. There's zero suppleness in the body that the suspension and low-volume tires can't possibly compensate for to give it a nice broken pavement ride.
But man it's alternatively a blast as a city car when you need to teleport to a space and a supremely quiet living space when stuck in traffic. The windshield is so far away that, while it makes the cockpit feel huge, it effectively tunnels your vision in the rain - side windshield wipers BMW? The A-pillar, as mentioned, is thick enough to be a problem, frankly. Maybe they can put in a middle seat.
The tires actually work, incredibly, in the wet and dry. 155s up front is nuts.
