    Default St Louis Visit

    Howdy Salonistas,

I'll be in St Louis for some of Gateway Cup in a few weeks. Just a couple of days there before I head out a bit farther south for some farmwork. I'll be there for about 72 hours and would love to know if any of you have "must-hit" spots in the city, including any sights, shopping, eating or drinking. I'll be traveling with my fiance, who is not a cyclist but loves a good race. We both enjoy outdoors sights, gin and whiskey, good art, live music and are both vegan.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

There's a thread across the hall with lots of good restaurant reccomendations: OT-St. Louis - The Paceline Forum

Off the top of my head I'd say Forest Park for the art and history museums, the Central West End for somewhat upscale hipsterish stuff and the U-City loop for more downscale hipsterish stuff. (Google the names and you'll get details.)

The CWE area of interest would be a few blocks of Euclid north of Lindell (but not too far north, that's sketchy) and the U-City Loop is Delmar from Big Bend to Skinker.

The Arch (and the museum under it) is worth a few hours if you've never seen it up close before. You can take a tram to the top, which is pretty neat - you sit in little pods that take you up one of the legs. They have to rotate relative to the track as they go up since the legs bend more and more the farther you go.

If you're into history, the Cohakia mounds (over on the IL side, just over the bridge) are really cool, but that may take more time that you'll have. At one point it was the one of the biggest "cities" in the world, and the largest in the western hemisphere. Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site and Cahokia Mounds Museum Society

PS Good luck with the racing.

It just occurred to me that you will most likely be seeing the U-City loop, since one of the GC races is usually held right there on Delmar. The night race is around Lafayette Square, which has some decent restaurants nearby. I've never been to Sqwires, but have heard good things about it. I have been to 1111 Mississipi and it was OK, but nothing to rave about.
