There's more than just soul on this record. A lot of country and blues as well. Really, really good. Sweet girl.
Made with Booker T and a Black Key. You can't complain.

You forgot, this beautiful gal is from Nashville.. My wife loves this time of year, i listen to soul music at night and dance northern soul on our hardwood floors, like it is the Wiggan. My 5 year old girl yells, "keep the faith!!!,' every time i do the 360* spin to Russian, dancing bear, leg kick. No Shit..
loved that one...can't forget about Leela James...her first album is amazing...
this is her cover of James Brown's Its a Man's World from her second album ...
more funk than soul, but this is a classic.

New-ish band out of Atlanta. Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics. Obvious comparisons to Amy Winehouse here, but much more authentic soul than modern pop-soul.
Their debut album is very good.
I can't let my comment about Amy Winehouse not being authentic go without caveats.
This is pure soul. And probably my favorite track she recorded.
Have you ever heard of Clever Jeff? He is an independent artist out of the San Francisco Bay Area. His songs tell great love stories and he has a great sound.

I'm guessing you have found what you were looking for in the past year and a half, but for anyone else looking for one of the best compilations of 60s soul music, check out Rhino's Beg, Scream and Shout: The Big ol' Box of 60s Soul. It's almost 150 songs, including lots of lesser known artists.

When I was little, I asked my dad what grits were (we ate a lot of grits). He responded that grits are groceries. It took me a while to figure that one out...
