I've tried participating with my own grumps. I've typed this out three times. But life is pretty damn good and we were just reminded this week of that when a gal who raced for us, a past u23 TT champ, and National Team member had surgery for brain cancer. My soon to be replaced AC unit, my not yet resolved problem with the Florida CFO, and a legal issue I've hired an attorney for are feeling pretty minor and fixable with relatively short money.

My manager asks me why I didn't work last Sunday. I said last time I checked you don't pay me enough for me to even think about work on Sundays.

My grump is that others who are so slow at their job and go to work on Sundays make me look bad. To those guys I say ,,, Go home and go for a ride you loosers!

Embarking on the process of year end evaluations and employee rankings ending in compensation decisions. It's necessary but very grumpy work.

The grump part is that this work is angst ridden and culminates in telling high performers that they earned a 3.2% raise while the other 99.9% will get a 2.9% raise for being mediocre. Or worse than mediocre.

Large companies just haven't sorted out "pay for performance". People say the words but don't mean it.

I was slightly under the weather for a week and not up to riding last weekend. The tub needs a plumber. My wife is lining up some household chores for Saturday.

So, yeah. What my good friend Jonathan said.

The New Yorker redesign has a font size for the reviews and calendar listings that is too damn small. Who do they think reads The New Yorker anyway? And the sidebar stuff is even smaller than that. Am I supposed to get the magnifying glass out of my OED to read it? If I wanted to use a device to read I've got lots of choices.

    * Cold is still hanging on -- generally tired feeling, slight congestion, headaches...
    * 2-month-old is entering a cranky phase.
    * Planned re-work of a bike frame is looking more like a start-from-scratch prospect.

And having to walk a co-worker through some of the most basic tasks involved in his job... The questions this guy asks on a daily basis clearly shows he is making no effort to understand anything.

On this morning's ride I watched a squirrel dash in front of me, tail raised in full alert.
-slight pause, dash under the driver's door of a Subaru going about 20 mph-
-another slight pause and it reappeared between the back wheels-
-the Subie rolled away and the squirrel dashed off the other side of the road-

I was laughing but a bit grumpy that I can't remember my last time doing something that badass. Need to step up my living.

My appointments are routinely scheduled for 1:20. If I don't sign in, I'm rescheduled for a much later date.

Without fail, I show up at 1:15.

Kids that make fun of me for riding my trainer at My daughters soccer practice. Am I honestly supposed to just SIT THERE for and hour and a half?

Brilliant. I'm trying to figure out how to ride mine in long meetings.

Yes! I use that time to run* cross country laps around the elementary school grounds. And if I'm feeling ambitious and the monkey bars unoccupied, I'll stop each lap to do crossfit-type things on the playground equip. Anyway, the trainer is genius and will replace my runs next season.

    *I run. That's my grump.

My superiors* don't give a fuck about me or the people I work with. They distort perceptions, grab the money, and use us up. My exit plan resolve has been doubled.

*to be honest, my immediate superiors are swell, though rather ineffectual.

My wife went to a neck pain specialist today. He is about 70. Her MRIs were "the strangest he's ever seen". He doesn't think that there is anything he can do for her with medication or injections and that she almost certainly needs surgery (by a guy we won't see for another 6 months).

In a perverse way this isn't a grump. We're actually elated. Several clueless neurosurgeons have declared her normal.

Our healthcare system can go fuck itself.

Didn't get considered for a job within the company. The facilities manager job was going to be filled by someone at the plant and I asked to be considered based on my experience operating and managing the engineering systems of aircraft carriers. The job went to a 34 year old electrical engineer because of his leadership experience. Ten years as an electrical engineer obviously trumps 27 years in the military, Seaman Recruit to Lieutenant Commander, when it comes to leadership experience.

I like my co-workers but when the boy finishes high school, I'm out of here.

Asbestos. It's one way to spend $800 for about an hour of work.
