    Default Garbage Disposal

What's the best? Durable and evil are the criteria.

If you're on a septic rather than sewer system, be aware that some think of these as kryptonite to your septic tank.
We had a blockage (on our 20th anniversary, no less) that I couldn't budge with a ram. When I had the septic folks arrive, they initially thought I was in a worse-case scenario situation as my tank was full to the brim. After pumping, he hot-jetted the line and was able to get everything flowing nicely, but said the culprit was the garbage disposal.

Throw that stuff in your compost bucket. -- you do have one as a dutiful Marinite?

You're just the task master it don't matter -- everything fails but natural processes.

Gross sieve, huge stockpot under the sink > parts that intentionally fail.

We've been through a few but I've found that a 60lb black lab mutt is the most effective.

Bloody Texan. Watch out - I'll steal your "fertilizer".

Yo 'member I said "Marin for schools"?

Anyway I don't care about all this... tell me why In and Out's burger veggies taste like shoe.

Indeed. Portable combo disposal, composter, space heater, alarm clock and security system. Plus he cleans out the recycling!

you forgot 'air freshener'...... maybe 'fresh' is misleading.....

I'm guessing that dog happily worked on that jug for at least 60 hours split into 15 shifts or so.

We (my wife and I) ate it at the normal human rate*. He then went ape on the container for about 2 hours solid before we were afraid he was going to break his face. He promptly freaked out with 20 minutes of sugar high then crashed out from the effort.

*Note- if we gave him the full jar it would have been a one sitting deal followed by hours of regret while we pondered the massive mistake we made.

A black lab can be taught proper excrement etiquette faster than any child. They cannot be taught what not to eat, as they will eat anything.

As a buddhist, I believe DarrenCT was an English Lab in a previous life. It is the only possible explanation for the speed at which he can wolf down anything on a ride.

Who goes to In-n-Out for the vegetable? I'd kill for one of those places here in OH. Last time in CA a couple of weeks ago the wife texts me a pic of the one by LA airport. Grrrrrrrr.

    PS Garbage disposal?

A dog's philosophy is if they eat it now, they can always throw it up later. The story of a projectile vomiting dog running through our house after eating an entire garbage bag full of Hollandaise sauce (and other things) still brings tears to the eyes at family gatherings.

NYC is working up a composting plan for food scraps. I've been looking at sealed containers for our building. We're thinking step-cans for medical waste might be good. Super sealed lids, heavy springs, metal, etc. We're also pricing .22 rifles for the massive population surge in rats. We figure shooting rats to clear the kitchen so you can get to the coffee maker will be the first thing everyone does in the morning. Garbage disposals would be cheaper and cleaner, but we'd have to redo the ancient (but perfectly functional) drain pipes in our building so they could manage the flow. Hopefully Bloomberg leaves before it becomes a reality.

My yellow lab Sparky, (RIP) once chewed his way through hurricane fencing links. Impressive.

old plumber friend was at our house shortly after we moved in
drain line for sink/washing machine wasn't flowing enough
the lady mentions "just need to install a disposal"
plumber friend says no way, you wash all that down the drain and it'll just clog everything up even quicker

    we compost

IMO garbage disposals are an inherently awful idea regardless of brand, cost, or design. Septic or sewer, food is murderous on any system and was not meant to go down a drain. Eventually, you will get an unbelievably awful, unspeakable stoppage.

Compost, or throw away. Really, what's the argument against?

Thank you for the insight. We actually do compost. I just wanted to mess with Jitashie's marin digs

I was told they are all the same. Just buy an insinkerator and be done with it. I put a $100 model in last winter.

I don't say this as an earthy-crunchy know-it-all. I say this as someone whose disposal caused a massive backup in the main sewer pipe in my basement (the one that ties into the street) the day before the closing (we were selling the house at the time). Good times.

Ah, the memories of me bringing plastic trash can after plastic trash can full of unmentionable slurry up a flight of stairs, through my kitchen and living room, out the back door, and dumping it in the backyard. And the memories of frantically trying to get the smell out of the house in a damn hurry.
