Default Source for fine tooth hole saws?

    Hi all,

I'm trying to track down a source for fine tooth (10tpi or better) hole saws in frame-friendly sizes. It seems like the ones resold through medford tools don't come in a couple of key sizes. According to this link they exist, but I haven't been able to find them for purchase.

    The sizes I need are:

    1-1/8"
    1-3/16"
    1-1/4"
    1-5/16"
    1-7/16"
    1-7/8"

Any help would be much obliged.

    Thanks
    Michael

Alternately, has anyone had any luck running annular cutters for tube mitering? Ideally, I'd like to get proper end mills (or the LAN71 stuff...), but those options are either out of my price range or outside my mill's capactity (universal z collets). Annular cutters seem to run about $50ea and generally have 3/4" shank, which will work with my mill.

I've been having good luck with most of these and the Bi metals too.

They seem to have more than most, but what are y'all doing for the crucial 1-7/16"?

    I stick a 1 3/8 in a vise and squish it a bit.

I take a 37mm one that I slightly grind on my backstand.

I like the saws from Missouri Precision Tools too, but don't buy their arbors - get some from Paragon, if you haven't already. You really don't want to start buying LAN71 cutters; if you try one you'll have to get them all, and that's a slippery, expensive slope! Annular cutters (like for a mag drill?) are a little coarse, I'd think. Maybe for plain 4130, but I don't think I'd use one on anything too hard. Power feed would help, but it could still grab and wreck your tube.

Starrett makes a 1 7/16" in their 6 pitch saws. They work great for me. I special order them at a place here in Portland called Palm Abrasive. I'm sure they can order and ship them to you if you can't find another source. These work great. I have never felt the need for finer pitched saws. I have a 1 1/2" saw, used almost entirely for 90 degree cuts, that has lasted for over 50 frames. (3 cuts per frame!)

I get mine from these guys: United Bicycle Supply in my once a year parts order. Don't know about the "Behco" brand, I use Starretts & Lenox saws. some times a good one will last for so long you can't remember how long you have had them {like Tony P says abv.} and some times they throw a tooth on the 1st cut.
    All my bikes use nothing but a 1.5" saw & a 1.25" saw. That's all. - Garro.

I wound up just getting a full run of sizes in the 6tpi starretts from MSC (via amazon). I ran a few test cuts with them and they seem to work great. I'm looking forward to having this mill up and running at long last.

I am looking at getting an entry level mill (less hand filing!) and was curious what you folks recommend for sizing requirements.

I see that Steve uses only 2 sizes but was wondering what others have in the hole saw toolbox.

Also is there a standard rule of thumb for which hole saw sizes work for which tube diameters.

    Thanks all!

Please re-think the final line. What are you mitering *to?* - Garro.

Thanks for the quick reply and guidance as always Garro!

So this is where I am confused. I have a kit from Henry James (29er MTN)..I know kits are usually bad. This is my second solo frame. :)

    TOP TUBE: 34.9 mm
    SEAT TUBE: 31.8 mm
    HEAD TUBE: 37.0 mm

Missouri Precision has several Rockhard HSS BiMetal Fine Tooth Hole Saws.
For the miter to the top tube (ST junction) I would use 1 1/4 hole saw (31.75 mm)

What would someone do for the top tube (HT Junction) There doesn't appear to be a 37mm hole saw option.

Also if I don't ask I will never know...what is the "crucial 1 7/16" all about?

Sorry for the basic question. So all one needs to do is cut using a hole saw the same diameter as the * TO * tube.

    Thanks Steve./All

For solo frame number two I'm going to suggest tooling down and that you cut these by hand. It will help you get a better feel for how these are going together, and give you some slow time to feel/ see/ hear what is happening with the metal. At this stage in the game you don't need to go faster. Not an option if you have a physical reason you can't hand file, but the "slow" road is probably the right one for a little bit longer. Besides, you'll earn every tube that ends up in the "short" pile that way!

paragon BB = 1.5" OD. 37mm HT = 1.5" OD + one or two file strokes. seattube sleeve = 1.25" >>>>>> two hole saws.

As of this morning, (8-23) I have found that we are backordered on all fine tooth holesaws, and since Ultra has declared bankruptcy in rance, we have little hope of any suppy in a reasonable amount of time. I apologize.

The order I placed a week or so ago for these has been cancelled.

Suggestions on the next best thing? I think I'd like a longer tubed saw if possible.

Fine Tooth Hole Saws for tube notching Any thoughts on these guys?

The Lenox saws at my local Lowes seem to be as good as the Missouri ones, I even think they are more round and cheaper too.
