About a year ago, one of my friends discovered that his wife had been cheating on him with his business partner. This had been going on for well over a year. My friend is a kind, giving, gentle soul. He was devastated.

A year later what chaps MY ass is: 12 months of 2x a week marriage-therapy and my friend can now 'admit' that it was in fact HIS fault.

Yesterday morning this happened. Drunk guy driving at a high rate of speed trashes an entire bodega and sends 4 people to the hospital, including a cyclist who, stopped by the side of the road, was hit by a fire hydrant the car broke off at its base when it hit it. Afterwards, the police began a program of increased ticketing in the precinct. To do what? Not writing speeding tickets or setting DUI road blocks. Ticketing cyclists.

I would say on average, I see 2-3 red light runners at every light in Manhattan while I am out riding. They either jump the light or blow through seconds after the light changes to red. I see innumerable drivers exceeding the speed limit by at least 10 mph. Ask any driver in the city what the posted speed limit is and they would never get it right. In Central Park in sections where the speed limit is 25mph, cars drive up to 55mph.

BTW, last year the precinct wrote a grand total of 11 speeding tickets.

I had a slow drain in my house, from the house to the septic. I called a plumber, he snaked it and said I needed a new pipe. His friend can do it... Tells me $1800.

I call another guy for a second opinion. Nothing wrong, he only snaked one of two pipes. $100 and he'll fix it today.

Being unwell and not being able to call in sick because of complicated contract language that would cost me about $500. Don't ask for an explanation. And no, I'm not unsafe sick. Wife hits me with the idea to replace my car ('01 Ford Escape, 4-cyl 5-speed manual) with an automatic... Why? So her mom has something to drive while she's here in August. What's her choice to replace it with? A Plymouth Grand Voyager with 165K miles on it. I don't think so...

My grump with the fans is contextual: The Green line is miserable during any rush hour. Add a Sox game and it's excruciating. Add a Stanley Cup game and it's hellacious. Multiply by a Park Street platform at around 100 degrees and an announcement that "The Green Line is experiencing delays in service"... Well, that makes me grumpy.

I had mustard to deliver, and therefore no choice but to endure it.
