interesting recognition tidbit for those of us who have been both places: Lincoln = Alameda. Particularly when it comes to dairy schwag, apparently.

$120 for the visit. He looked at me 30 seconds and told me eardrum wasn't damaged. He can give me steroids for the ringing and pressure, but won't do it unless I come back for a $125 hearing test (plus im assuming another $120 for the visit) that they can't do until tomorrow. He basically shook me down.

mauna: I herniated a disk in november and promptly drank and ate myself into an additional 20lbs that has yet to be shed. Also, I have been doing Yoga Teacher training which has severly limited my weekend riding. Currently I am 2,500 miles behind where I was last year at this time. However, I am happy to be in incredible yoga shape.

If you put the steroids on your ears, they'll grow big enough that the wind noise will block out the ringing. Problem solved.

There are lots of more legitimate grumps than mine this week (Boston, Texas, mail sorters in DC) but we have gotten 5 inches of rain since I left the office last night. Sinkholes on the Southside. And they had to open the floodgates (literally) and raw sewage is flowing into Lake Michigan. The same Lake Michigan we drink out of. Looks like no sunrise trip to the beach with the dog this Saturday.

That was quite the video huh. Beat him down, drug him off the bus and left him in the street for nothing, at least he didn't look very menacing in the video. Not the kind of thing I like our fine city to be nationally recognized for. It's really a nice place to live, were it not for the fridge raiding pricks.

    And the cops.

Last week a cop in Alameda hit his lights, siren, backed up traffic on Park St...to tell me to walk my bike on the sidewalk. Perfectly understandable as I was knocking over old ladies and little kids were getting stuck in my big ring. Well at least a very sarcastic hot girl mocked the cop and his nanny-state mandate mercilessly.

Funny similar things used to happen in Lincoln 30 years ago.

BUT my true grump is something that happened last summer in Alameda: firefighters and cops stood around and watch a man drown himself in the shallow surf without lifting a finger to help, citing the lack of departmental training required to rescue. A passerby ended up pulling his body to shore. Every time I see one of those assholes I give them the stink eye.

The plumbing in my house is falling apart after a complete gutting and renovation of a 60 yo home less than a decade ago. Every week it's something that shouldn't be something. The good news is that my wife is becoming one hell of an emergency plumber.

..., that said, and based on my observations at last years camp, you'll still be at or near the front each and every day. Do well my friend. Give the fellow campers a hug for Linda and I.

Kids' homework. I swear these teachers hand out projects that are designed for parents, but I do see that they help hold parents accountable and engaged. That said, I'm trying not to be that competitive "Pinewood derby winner" dad, but I'm enjoying working with my 1st grader on his meerkat model for their animal studies presentation. Better get finished soon - it's due tomorrow. Wire hangers and gorilla tape rule.

I'm not getting any happier. Can barely see down the street right now. At least I don't feel guilty about drinking beer and not riding. And the birds are happy.

out pushin a bike around per usual today
i have/had a lot of "close calls"--thousands. it happens if you're out there, i get that
    this was something else

was riding in the bike lane on a state highway
    bike/auto speed differential is ~35mph
the overhanging flat bed on a 26' truck grazed my neck
the entire left side of my body was under the truck for its length (in the bike lane)

threw my balance to the right (what cat must feel like) for just long enough
look ahead to see the driver laughing and jeering me as he disappears down the road

quarter-inch more and i was dead

    makes ya think

Just to put it in perspective, here are some pictures from my evening dog walk. The wind was howling out of the north into the low pressure system, and it hasn't even started to snow here yet.

Mapleag, which is 80 miles south of me, is still grooming its cross country ski trails.

On the bright side, Mayor Rybak has declared tomorrow "Ski to Work Day" in Minneapolis.

So I work for a school district, and I'm doing stuff that's *way* beyond my job description. I'm generally ok with that... I guess I've sort of been conditioned as a teacher to feel like no amount of work is too much to put in when it's needed. Anyway, I'm really doing the jobs of multiple people, and all of them would be higher than me in title and salary. My supervisor knows it, and she's took a coordinator position to the superintendent to review, the idea being that I'm doing all of this stuff now, I should have the title and the salary. The superintended crossed out the title, and put a lower one, and then crossed out the salary and put a much lower one, left *all* of the responsibilities and said "that looks good, bring that to the board". I'm not even really supposed to know about all of this happening... so I can't even really complain about it, but I'm starting to burn out *and* now I have a bad attitude.

Furthermore, just got back from the barber and he said "You have an alopecia? Are you stressed out?" All I could do is laugh...

I need a vacation. Maybe like the one that I was supposed to get and ended up working through because the superintendent *had* to have reports run and ready to be delivered on the Monday when everyone else got back.

    Sigh. So much grump.
