Wonderful story, thanks for posting! A genius, in the truest sense of the word and a real loss that he's gone.

One of the remaining Britten's is in the local museum - a beautiful bike and worth a look if you're in New Zealand.

This book is worth the read:

Every time I'd walk past Te Papa I'd go up for a coffee at the cafe just so I could sit down and look at that bike.

One of the coolest motorcycles ever made. Many of his concepts weren't new but he was one of the first guys to combine a lot of forward thinking concepts into a competitive machine that could take on the factory bikes. The fact that is was done with limited resources makes it all the more impressive. I was visiting a friend who worked in the same office as Cycle World magazine the day John Britten passed away. I was floored when the editor came in and told me.

    Here's a drawing I did of the V1100 in '94.

Real back-yard engineering too...the book tells a story of him heat-treating the engine block and quenching it in a bathtub of water. The water kept evaporating so they had to keep filling it up from the back-yard swimming pool.

    Amazing drawing Honus!
