Re: Bringheli Jig Redesign
I chose my length based on the maximum butt length I could find from any vendor. You have to remember the longer you make the arm the greater the moment is around your fixation point. I built mine small to check one side at a time. In theory it makes sense, I guess I will see when I actually use the thing.

Re: Bringheli Jig Redesign
Been a crazy week at work. Managed to get one part done. I haven't had a chance to finish the print however.

Re: Bringheli Jig Redesign
Worked on this for a bit today in between things.
PRINT:
PART:
Starting to Assemble. I am going to take it home tonight and check fitment before I drill the center holes in the main plate.

Re: Bringheli Jig Redesign
Test Fitting the horizontal slide.
T-nut on the backside for quick easy adjustment.

Re: Bringheli Jig Redesign
I'm enjoying watching what you're doing. One question: do you plan to run a level from the pointer (3/8 rod) on the lower HT support back to a vertical scale on the main jig frame? Or, do you feel that it's accurate enough on its own, as different head tube angles are employed?

Re: Bringheli Jig Redesign
Hey thanks, yeah it's been fun, but more importantly a learning experience. My initial plan is to make a tool similar to Dave Andersen's and just cut out the step of having to locate the head tube on a cone. The head tube will fall on a flat surface that is machined the exact same height as the pointer. Then use the X-Y to bisect the engraved HT support center line. Once I have that marked I can just simply slide the lower HT support up until the pointer hits the bisect line. That's the theory anyways. Right now I am just trying to split up the three adjustments. I'll probably learn something the first time I use it and redo the entire thing, haha. This is just my first idea never using or building a jig. I just saw this as a major pain, especially how hard the head tube is to get out with a solid shaft running all the way through it.

Re: Bringheli Jig Redesign
slowly but surely:
It works so good, buttery smooth and stiff as an I-beam. The final pieces should be here on Tuesday. I ordered them from automationmaterials.com faced 6 sides. This should cut down on the amount of work I have to do to them. Then I'll dismantle and send the parts to Anodizing, just in time for my next frame. (parts are already trickling in)
That's all for this week, because tomorrow I'm going garage saling! Hopefully I can find a nice drill press and a better vise.

Re: Bringheli Jig Redesign
Still moving along. Working on the top centering cone support. So far so good!
On a lighter note, yesterday I was freed from my neck brace!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 13 weeks after my 27 foot fall on a road bike, my c7 fracture has healed! One of the reasons I started getting into frame building was because I was so dang bored not being able to ride my bike. Hopefully now that I can ride again in 3 weeks I will still find time to build frames!
That's all for this weekend. I'm going to the coast to let the sea mist caress my neck meat.

Re: Bringheli Jig Redesign
What did you fall off of that was 27'?
-
Re: Bringheli Jig Redesign
^Haha, yeah I guess that would make sense since I'm from Portland...
I hit road debris coming around a hard blind corner which caused me to miss the turn and fly off the road, which just happened to be a 27foot cliff. The GPS plotted the fall perfectly. The best part is, the fall took place in a cemetery, where I landed was an empty grave between 2 headstones... I really need to go back an buy that plot.

Re: Bringheli Jig Redesign
Wow, that's a crazy story.

Re: Bringheli Jig Redesign
Yeah, I'm lucky to be alive....anyways I'm still going on this! It's very hard to find the time with work so busy though!
Top cone mounted and DONE!
Finally had time to finish my jig stand, been wanting to get it off the bench for a while now!

Re: Bringheli Jig Redesign
Wow....impressive stand!! Did you fab that yourself?

Re: Bringheli Jig Redesign
Really digging the stand and the new HT bits are awesome too. This has been a great thread to watch for sure.

Re: Bringheli Jig Redesign
DeeDub - Thank you! Yes, but it wasn't initially built for this purpose. I originally built it for my real job. It holds up a labeling machine for a tradeshow display. I'm going a different direction with my booth this year, so I decided to re-purpose it. I needed to do a bit of modification to fit it on the Bringheli, but I think I subconsciously designed it to eventually hold my jig because it ended up being perfect :).
PCW - Thanks a bunch, I really appreciate the support I've been receiving from this forum, and I am having a lot of fun honing my machining skills. I think I'm almost having as much fun building tooling as I did building my first frame.
Anyways, here is what I had a chance to finish on Friday after work. 26 years old, and I spend my entire Friday night building a bicycle jig...is it any wonder why I'm still single...

Re: Bringheli Jig Redesign
Back from Anodizing
Working on my measuring attachment this week. Should make setting this thing up a breeze.

Re: Bringheli Jig Redesign
Started working on my scales this weekend.

Re: Bringheli Jig Redesign
Here is the jig in action, What an incredible difference!
HT Scale Pointer
Now on to the back end!

Re: Bringheli Jig Redesign
Todd, if this all works it's the best thing to happen to a Bringheli I've seen. Just losing the rod through the headtube alone is huge.
