I watched the 1985 International Bicycle Classic last night for "homework"
    Everyone looked amazing
of course Lemond was over the top classy
and watching young Hampster sit on his bike as he climbed- buttah!

growing up i had a couple of full length mirrors around my trainer with the old Winning "pin-ups" taped around
    "make the break"

What about it? Seems to me it's a good place to start when working out your fit/position, esp. if you're doing it from scratch.

A few years ago I decided to see if I was riding at KOPS and freaked out because I was really far behind it. So I changed my position and rode like that for a year or two. It didn't make any sense. I only realized it when my quads started killing me during a race and I felt fine but wasn't going anywhere. I was too far forward and underutilizing my glutes. I'm back on setback posts now and re-learning how to pedal circles from back here.

Now to just figure out how to avoid saddle sores while doing long, slow distance and I'll be set.

    Recruit the glute

One of my climbing mantras. Along with relax the grip, focus on the exhale, and this does not justify an extra maple bar.

That makes a lot of sense. I wish I understood more about anatomy.

My impression of saddle sores is that they are not uncommon even among top pros. Samual Sanchez and Tom Boonen both had them last year. Greg Lemond suffered from them. Etc.

Speaking of pros, does anyone remember hearing why Ivan Basso was using this seatpost on his road bike in the Tour de France last year?

I'm pretty sure he didn't actually ride it in the TDF. I'm guessing FSA wanted to show it off or Cannondale wanted to show the crazy shit you can outfit a Supersix Evo with while still hitting the weight limit.

I agree with this 100%. ever notice that it is less comfortable riding in the drops when on the turbo than it is when riding on the road? i think todd explained the reason why previously. when you apply pressure to the pedals when on the road, it unweights the upper body. the same does not happen on the turbo. a lot of people who get a turbo fit DO end up with a shopping cart fit.

I'd rather just have a good fit! The holidays mean I can't quite fork over the cash for a super duper fit job yet, so I'm trying a few things on my own.

Just to drag up an oldie....

Thought I'd try to fit my lady tonight using the Comp_ Cyclist fit calculator. Measured twice just to make sure, but they're telling me she needs a 46 st (c-c), 56.5 tt bike. The weird thing is her proportions are exactly the opposite--she's got more leg than torso. Completely baffled.
This is my substitute for pistol and ball. With a philosophical flourish Cato throws himself upon his sword; I quietly take to the bike.

What's her saddle height suppose to be? Seat tube length is fairly irrevelant depending on the bike being discussed.

I did the CC fit page thing as well, a while ago. I suppose I am pretty normally proportioned, but the *frame dimensions* it suggested did not match any road frame sold by CC, or anyone else for that matter. Weird. Fit formulas frequently give odd results.

I am on a bog-standard 59cm square, 73deg/73deg frame, and it's basically fine, as unfit as I am, with the saddle all the way back. That one change made a HUGE difference.

Come on. For 99% of non-racing cyclists that is not a comfortable way to sit on a bike, at all. Trying to apply that position to most people is just racer chic.
As for handling "properly", when is that ever an issue unless a person is racing?

I guess I'm a 1%er. Occupy Wall Street come get me.
