This week I drove the length of Cty 116 - commonly known as the Echo Trail - from Buyck to Ely, MN. It's 47 miles of hairpin turns and about 75% gravel. A friend from Ely once described the Echo Trail to me as "chlorine for the local gene pool."
My first thought was that it would be a great place for a mixed surface bike race. So good in fact that I'm surprised Rapha hasn't found it yet and produced a lumberjack-themed commemorative jersey.
It also crossed my mind that it would be fun to load up a rented and insured Subaru with helmeted VSalonistas and let er rip.
Absent that, I had a lot of fun in a crappy free car with a crappy free canoe on top drifting the corners and finding the bottom of the suspension. Here are a few shots where it was straight enough to take pictures while driving.
