    Default MTB crank w/STI - I know.......

I know the left STI road shifter pulls less cable than the left MTB shifter. Has anyone had much luck using a triple road front deraileur w/MTB crank and STI brake/shifters? I believe the chainring spacing is the same road to MTB. IRD makes a 9 speed specific derailleur with enough capacity to handle the mtb chainrings/crank I want to use. I'm concerned about the derailleur bottoming out against the chainstay. Is there another option other than bar-cons? Does anyone make a 'travel-agent' type device that can increase the cable pull of the front STI road shifter to let it actuate an mtb FD ? Any input is appreciated.

The ring spacing is fine. I have used older 105 FDs with a 42t outer ring and STI levers with good results. Plenty of CS clearance. The IRD "compact" FD should work, too.

There is a 'travelagent' to convert road derailleurs to toppull, it leaves the geometry the same though so the combination STI-mtb shifter it is only good for two rings
