I've passed by the miniature Tardis dozens of times, mostly on my bike but almost never while walking. I got to walk by it, and to my surprise, it's actually a free little library.

Might not be bigger on the inside, but it does contain multitudes.

Sister-in-law loaned me her Canon 300mm f4 IS L lens. Which was very nice of her. Shot this near darkness after half a day under a house and the other half string trimming ad nauseum. Shaky in other words. But at least you can see that this is a blue bird, which in eastern US means it is an Eastern Bluebird.

At first glance, I’d have taken it for an indigo bunting based on color.

But the nest box means it’s a blue bird. Have you checked to see how many eggs there are?

Evening light creates wacky intensity out of iridescent feathers. He’s pretty dashing though. Not sure if he is a repeat here or if the female is, but this has consistently been the most productive house. Right now there are five chicks. This year has the makings for a big year though. For the first time 3 out of 6 boxes have bluebirds, and each pair has 5 chicks. Our biggest summer has been 9 chicks total from two broods by the same pair. So fifteen from 3 pairs on the first brood is pretty amazing. A lot can happen though. Each year a bear has eaten the first brood. And right now it is cold enough the parents are definitely stressed. Insects aren’t very active under 60F and it has been in the 50’s for a few days. So I grabbed a bag of mealworms and the parents have been stuffing them down the throats of their young.

We have Indigo buntings nesting in our yard also. They are tiny in comparison. Just a notch larger than an American goldfinch. So not much confusion in person.

Now that you mention it, I do remember you mentioning the bears. Yikes, and I happen to like bears and bluebirds…

We only have robins and house finch here. Robin nest was predated early on (saw shell fragments on the lawn) and sat empty until repurposed by house finches. The current nest has both finch eggs and a cowbird egg, with the latter unlikely to make it, as house finches are purely vegetarian.
