2019-20 Good movies (Can't bring myself to type Osc*rs)
Since we got sent home from the hospital because baby ain't ready, we had free family babysitting in town and went to see 1917. Amazing --> war is hell, but it's still a film about Providence. Unbelievable cinematography.
We saw the Farewell earlier this year; really found it a slog, couldn't find an emotional toehold to experience the levity/gravity with the characters.
Also saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Loved it (not moving like 1917, obvi, but the bums lost, Lebowski). Life being what it is, those are the only three I made it to this year, so too small a sample size, but I wouldn't shed a tear if 1917 won some things.

Ford v Ferrari. Some creative liberties taken, but a great performance by Christian Bale. Brings home the visceral thrill of motor racing to a wide audience.
Knives Out. Very little gore, no CGI, no sex, very little action. Great acting and a storyline that requires the viewer to pay attention and think.

Little Women. Great artist as young family member tale with current messaging. Great director, actors. Really well done.
Your wife will like it too...

Ditto on 1917.
See it in Digital Dolby if you can.

Yeah, I saw 1917 at the weekend - best movie I’ve seen in a while and definitely one for the big screen.

We wanted to see both those. 1917 won out last night because it was at the beautiful old theater downtown and we thought we could handle seeing these on the small screen later. Though F vs. F looked boss - wouldn't have hated seeing it in the theater!

We saw it at the lowest tech theater around, but the one with pretty curtains. :) There wasn't much music, but what music there was was a truly great score, I mean where you're asking did they resurrect Dvorzak or Jan Sibelius or somebody? And then that spiritual song. Boyo boy.

Recent mini movie binge- Ford vs. Ferrari was fun and well acted. Little Women was really well done and Knives Out was a great fun movie- I promise you will yell out at the end.
My favorite performance of the year though was Renee Zellweger in Judy. I was absolutely transfixed by her. The Tarantino movie was too long and a bit sloggy for me with wild cartoon violence at the end.
I'm curious if anyone else saw Judy and loved it. I might be an outlier.

Ford v Ferrari will undoubtedly be very good once I finally get around to seeing it!

Went on a Fritz Lang binge this weekend and watched The big heat, The Woman in the Window, Ministry of Fear and Scarlet Street. All great films. Found them for free on the web. All four films recycled the same actors, cause I guess like Hitchcock Lang had those actors he preferred working with -Mike G

^^^ I like that “usual crew” preference of certain directors. The Coen brothers do it too. Soderbergh illustrates the risks by sometimes casting very capable actor friends in the wrong roles.

Coda and Belfast have been my two favorites of the past few years.
I saw a quick clip from School of Rock recently and I need to check if it’s kid appropriate. It’s been a few years since I saw it but I think my kids would love it.
