I didn't know Dave Brockie, but he and the members of GWAR were an extension of a pretty fertile art scene in Richmond in the late 80's, early 90's while I was living there and trying to become the greatest living painter in the entire world. I pretty much failed, but GWAR was a success, in large part (my impression - I could be wrong) because of Dave Brockie's leadership and management. There was a real company behind the band, and they did all their own fabrication, innovating on techniques and working with other entertainment ventures. They actually had a factory/studio set up in the north part of Richmond on Chamberlayne Ave where they built all their stuff. Another example of a group of creatives a lot of "serious" people might write off as lucky idiots who were actually very committed about what they were doing. And for a while they made power very very nervous, all because of something between Dave Brockie's legs.
