    Default Grill Lighting

Grilling at night was driving me crazy. Loose a hand to the flashlight, ask a guest to hold the flashlight (unreliable and mostly unavailable during Covid), or get all squinty. My first thought was to replace the outside lightening but that didn't really get the job done. By combining scrap wood, camera gear, and a holder from Maglite; this setup gets the job done.

Glued a nut into scrap wood mounting block:

Quick release adapter from old photo equipment and mounting plate:

W / Maglite clip style holder:

A little bright for my phone pics but perfect lighting in person:

That looks like it works well.

A camping style headlamp works fine, too.

Camping headlamp, tried it. Worked ok but found it frustrating when moving around the grill and then to the table and back to the grill etc.

    Other methods:

Tried a clip-on grill light attached to the lid. It worked ok but the lens melted after a high heat searing session.

Tried father-in-law holding the flashlight. Every time he talks, he puts the flashlight down. He simply can't talk and shine a light at the same time.

For work, I frequently mount my iphone in a joby tripod for video. Using the phone light worked pretty well. Concerned about melting the phone and lack of access to the device, this inspired the d cell maglite wonder setup.

Dad hat gift from my Mother a few years back...indispensable for grilling in the evening and making an evening run to the woodpile.

Small mag lite with some duck tape on the end - hold it in your mouth like a civilized early 90s back packer.
