    Default Boots on the ground...

After plugging my favorite sock company on another thread (disclosure: it's owned by my extended family in WI and IA) I saw a promotion they run to provide socks to our active-duty soldiers.

I mean who doesn't want some nice socks for a holiday gift?

I need to replace some work socks anyway and their prices are decent. I can probably put some in the soldier cart too. Good timing for me, my Duluth socks are getting thin after 5 years.

$600 billion in annual military spending and people have to send deployed soldiers their own socks?

None of the lawmakers have received bribes from sock manufacturers, only from companies making materials for killing or avoiding being killed.

During the first Iraq war it was body armor.

And forget about what they don't get when they come back home.

Wow, this is just about socks. When I was deployed, we were issued socks and could get replacement boots as well, but I'd buy much of my own stuff around the time of my annual uniform allowance which was intended to replace stuff I wore out.

While deployed in Iraq, we would frequentlyget care packages from people we didn't know around Christmas time. Good socks were always the most desired gift. Yes, we were issued standard socks, but a good pair of hiking socks was a gift from heaven. Don't remember which brand, but one had a fantastic feel/support, and wouldn't shrink when dried in the nuclear clothes dryers we had available.
