3 of our giant aspens went down during a strong storm Sept 7 that included straight-line winds and lightning. Also found two trees with brand new racing stripes and lots of long splinters strewn around on the ground.

Jorn, in this context what does "racing stripes" mean? I think I see them in the image, but have no clue where they come from.

I might be mistaken but I think that he’s referring to the lightning path after it strikes the tree and heads toward the roots.

Ah. I thought he was referring to the circumferential marks. I do see longitudinal marks, but would not have guessed that they were caused by lightning.

Sorry - lightning. Two ash trees and a pine got hit by lightning. This is the pine.

The aspens (largest measured out at 110') got knocked down by a straight-line wind plus weakened soil due to lots of rain and soil churning by invasive earthworms. Yep, earthworms. It is a thing.

Thanks - that makes sense, and looks like what I've seen in the past after a lightning strike.

About 10 years ago a tree near my water wellhead was hit by lightning. It fried the PumpTec pump protection box I had down in the basement. Luckily the pump itself was unharmed. After the well service guys figured out what had most likely happened I remembered the storm that had likely caused the problem and the "bang" from the strike. I went out to look at the trees and surprisingly the one that showed the most obvious evidence of a recent hit was one of the shorter trees in the area.

2nd look and I saw the silhouettes in the distance. Is there a story behind this? Inquisitive minds…

Good eye Mike…public roadway art on WA SR 155 about 15 miles north of the Coulee Dam. Mrs. RW spotted it and the figures appear to be fabricated of either unfinished carbon steel or COR-TEN…pretty cool with the landscape, skies and the story. BTW, if you haven’t visited either the Hoover Dam or the Coulee Dam, highly recommend for a construction dude like you. WA state also has a series of dams in partnership with Canada in some cases, that are also quite interesting given their stories.

A future trip will start in Las Vegas, and I'm hoping to take my wife to the Hoover Dam on the way out of town. She's not sure she wants to see the magnitude of water loss but I think she'll be glad to see the dam and the intake towers.

Book a tour of the turbine room at the Hoover…you won’t regret it. The turbine room was closed at the Coulee because of construction and I looked like a beaten pup, although I did get to watch a 45minute B&W flick from the 60’s with a 4th grade class in the visitor center theatre. I’ve been singing Woody Guthrie’s Roll On Columbia ever since.
