Maybe some of you can set me on the right track here. I have a Seiko Sumo that I really like. Problem is that it seems to lose a few minutes a week and does not have the reserve on the spring that they claim. I have heard that slow running might mean that it needs to be degaussed. Or is this a send it in for service thing? It’s only a couple years old.

The 6R15 movement in the Sumo is only spec’ed to -15/+25, so one to two minutes per week would be pretty close to expectation. My old Sumo was was right in that range. You can have it regulated, but there is no guarantee that it will improve much. I can’t speak to the power reserve. I never really paid much attention to how long it lasted when it was off my wrist. If I took it off for more than a day, I knew I was going to visit time.gov to reset.

If you think it’s been magnetized, you should be able to take it to a local watch shop and have them de-magnetize it for little to no cost in just a couple minutes. If I were you, I’d start with that, because a full service will cost $85 to $125 and probably take a couple weeks. It seems to make sense to eliminate the cheap/fast option before moving on to the more involved option.

The back tells me 6R15.

Thanks for the knowledge. I’ll pop into the shop across the street here and see if they can de mag. I really just need to remember to give it a few twists on the hand wind before I take it off.

I'm pretty sure the Sumo has only ever had the 6R15 movement, which is at least better spec'ed than any of the 4r movements. That being said, it's not the most accurate.

Yeah Sumo = 6R15. I'm guessing it needs demagnetized which as stated above can be done at the local watch shop.

Found this new Seiko Prosepx Diver SBDC053 for cheap on eBay and then used a 15% off coupon to make it even cheaper.

It is supposed to be even nicer in person.

62mas! Well kinda... Heard very good things about the new ones and I dig that blue.

One of the things I like about NATO straps is the double protection of the strap passing under both bars. That point was reinforced this morning when I had to bunnyhop a brave squirrel and this fell off. (That's never happened before, but I rarely ride with a watch.)

Got this one new as a gift in '91. It takes a beating.

I'm happy to say it's doing fine despite the 40km/h drop onto the pavement.

It's also a pretty good argument for semi-regular spring bar replacement. Even with a NATO, they're unquestionably the cheapest component on the watch and they can definitely corrode over time. I had this happen to me at least once before I knew anything about watches. Now I keep a variety on hand for different watches.

Cheap spring bars. Those ones only lasted 27 years! I demand a refund!

My wife bought me a TAG that looks like yours, but the strap is a little different. After more than 20 years and a few batteries, it has kept perfect time. The locking mechanism is a little suspect. It slips on really bumpy roads on bike rides. I have had it adjusted a few times, but I just quit wearing any watch on a ride. It has always kept better time than my Rolexes.
