Spotlight Build :: Ti-Carbon Road ISP // Ogle Edition

A special build for framebuilder, watchmaker, designer, machinist, and all around perfectionist Josh Ogle. Josh designed and/or manufactured many of the titanium parts on this bike that make it so refined. To us, this bike checks all the boxes on the list of what a modern custom bicycle should be, but upon further inspection, you will notice some next-level tech. Custom made titanium details litter the frame from the stem faceplate to the derailleur pulleys with so many easter eggs in the middle. It was a true honor to have a friend, collaborator and vendor also become a client. An amazing project to be a part of.

That thing goes to 11, but the headset bearing top cap goes to 12.

Love the subdued gray tape on an essentially battleship-gray titanium and carbon fiber bicycle. Very sharp.

Tyler, I noticed that the inside of one of your 3D printed dropouts has a grid/screen/matrix. I would assume they would be hollow. What is the purpose of this grid?

Great question. They actually are completely hollow. That mesh on the end is just a thin screen that is used to hold the OD tolerance during printing so the finished piece fits up to the chainstay tube perfectly. We machine the mesh out before we put them into the bike. We had to sneak in a bunch of tricks to get these dropouts to be the way we wanted. These dropouts pushed the limits of the printing machines and we eventually had to have our engineer work directly with them for the final production tweaks to make them actually printable. It was a big learning experience, as was the production of the Mono-Yoke. 3D printing is an amazing process yielding incredible results.

Tyler those dropouts are evidently set up to use replaceable hangers: do you have your own proprietary design or are you using something more widely available?

We designed and made our own proprietary hangers in two styles: the longstanding style we call Regular (used by SRAM and most Campy) and the Direct Mount standard (Shimano). The disc side centers via the tapered Syntace Thru-Axle System. The thru-axle screws directly to the hanger on the drive side mechanically fixing it to the wheel and frame. The hangers are secured to the dropout by a small bolt on the inside face that keeps the hanger on during installation and when there is no wheel on the bike. The hangers are also keyed into the dropout by surrounding the rounded corner giving them added vertical stiffness and strength. By designing our dropouts and hangers together we feel we have simplified the interface as well as created a lighter, stiffer, stronger and more unified system.
