Believe it or not, but I found good value with the Kirkland Toscano label from Costco. Fruity, grassy...just lovely flavor at a nice price. Make sure to get the slender bottle with the Toscano label - in the past it has been dated with the year of harvest. This is a good time of year to buy the most recent vintage, too. I'm not a member but whenever I know somebody who shops there, I try to get them to buy me a bottle.

I'm bumping this thread after seeing RW's chicken piccata. Looked like he was using extra light for this dish. I've always used evoo because that's what I've seen on the cooking shows...Teach me on what's best for what use please.

    Partanna EVOO from Sicily

We've tried a lot of different olive oils, and for general purposes we love this stuff. 101 ounce tin for about $30 bucks on Amazon, and we end up re-ordering about every 6-8 weeks.

Thanks for the tip. I've been using WholeFoods house brand for general purpose and losing interest rapidly. I'll give it a go.

Believe it or not, the mafia is heavily involved in the production (counterfeiting) of olive oil. The vast majority of extra virgin in American food stores is far from extra virgin but blended with other oils (canola and soybean). I think counterfeit olive oils make up roughly 75% of the olive on shelves and this includes some of the best known brands in our supermarkets. It may have the color and the taste of extra virgin but most likely it is not 100% virgin. This type of olive oil is called lampante olive oil. I pay close attention to the labels and honestly, will buy California extra virgin most of the time...and I am 100% Sicilian. Or buy local if you can.

The villa we rent outside of Lucca has an olive orchard of something like 800 trees. The owners do not spray (which has made things rough for them with the fly and the fungus, but they got a nice crop out this last season) produce a small yield of very interesting flavored olive, have their crop pressed individually - rather than collectively where you get X amount of oil out if you contribute Y amount of olives, if I understand it correctly - and bottle their oil to be sold as Leonida Olive Oil. The flavor is really nice - a bit rough hewn I suppose, but that goes with crusty bread, a robust nicoise, caprese, etc. I like it. Local product, small yield, no pesticides, direct to you!

I guess that in North Italy isn't different from what we do in the South. You need to bring in at least 100kg of olives with decent quality that would make at least 13-14 liters, under that limit you have to buy olives from there. It's because you cannot run the "frantoio" half empty, it's a waste and won't work well.
We've had over 40 liters last year, while this year we had to get olives form the neighbors to make a mere 15 liters! We will use that oil in 2 years time, and mainly for cooking.

Ah that makes sense. Probably what the owners explained to me and I just got it mixed around.

Where in the south? General area - promise I won't go visit your dad unexpectedly.

Oh, Cagliari has plenty of reasons to deserve a visit.

There's also a bit of sand right in town, quite handy when in summer you get >37ºc

If you have a Portuguese grocer nearby, try Azeite. IMO it is comparable to good Italian oil and quite a bit cheaper. In our grocer the good brands don't have much in the way of fancy labels but are marked with the year they were produced.

Stopped by olio2go today and picked up a bottle of Fonte di Foiano Grand Cru. You don't get much more robust than that in an Italian EVOO. My kids said it was too harsh, but they are stupid kids. :)

If you are near Merrifield (in Northern Virginia) during their business hours, you should definitely check the place out.

They have some tasting bottles at the front counter that cover the whole spectrum. If you can tell them what you are looking for or what you like, they will start breaking open bottles in that range for you to taste. ;) I can't recommend them enough.

Review on that Fonte di Foiano Gand Cru after a few rounds: superb olive fruit flavor, bitter in a good way and a very peppery finish. Awesome.
