Re: Cycling Camera
IMG_0740.JPGIMG_0653.JPGI've been putting the Canon Powershot D20 through the paces - not only does it take excellent pics, but you can shoot HD video up to 10 meters under water you can just hang it off your neck boating, or just let it sit in the puddle at the bottom of your kayak.
Includes GPS as well.
Pretty stoked on it for $269.00

Ricoh GR Digital Camera 175743 B&H Photo Video
This is cool. I'd still be hesitant to carry around an $800 camera on the bike.

Re: Cycling Camera
I am thinking of getting an S100 or Elph 320 as a complimentary camera to always have on hand/in pocket. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone would mind commenting on the differences between those two cameras (other than the pixel count). I am especially interested in views on image quality, ease of use, etc.

Re: Cycling Camera
Echo recommendations for underwater shockproof cameras. Mine is the Lumix TS camera, but the Canon one also works great.
My problem with the non waterproof camera is that the lens pops out with turning on the camera, and having that camera accidentally turned on causes the lens to pop off/loose/maladjusted, rendering the picture quality unfocused. No more issues after switching to the waterproof ones since there is no lens movement protruding out to be damaged.
As for image quality, I have not noticed huge degradation for general purpose use. I do know that having a camera to be there helps to have a picture, whereas trying to make sure camera does not get damaged seems to always cause me not to have the camera when I wish I had.

Re: Cycling Camera
i plan on using a GoPro Hero3 for vid, and stills on and off the bike during rides, using iphone as the viewfinder. i'll post results.

Re: Cycling Camera
I am using a Sigma DP1 (or a Leica V-LUX 30). I have a bunch of pictures on my blog from both cameras.* The Sigma has a very wide-angle lens but does some weird stuff with the colors that I'm still trying to figure out. It's actually quite attractive but not realistic.
*I am not a photographer, I do not claim to be a photographer.

here's the quick rundown. The key bit is that the sensor on the s100 is 50% bigger than on the elph. this results in lower noise, better image quality and better low light performance. the size of the sensor in the s90/95/100 was one of the key reasons I got one. it's the same sensor they use in their powershot g-series, and one of the bigger ones found in compact P+S cameras.

bigger sensors = better.

Re: Cycling Camera
The Nikon and the Ricoh mentioned above both have APS-C sized sensors, which is the same as the ones in most DSLRs (other than the pro models which are full-framed where the sensor = 35mm film size.)

Re: Cycling Camera
OT but related: Nik makes plugins that work with photo editing programs like Photoshop, Lightroom, Aperture (and perhaps iPhoto, not sure) that have been used by a lot of pros for years. Google bought Nik recently, and they bundled a package of 6 Nik plugins into a package that costs about as much as one plugin used to cost, so if you think you might use any of them, this is a pretty decent deal as an add-in for your post-processing.

All of the plug-ins are super rad. I just hope they stick around a while now that the mothership has bought them.

Re: Cycling Camera
I have a Leica cl with a 40mm lens
I'm pretty sure it will fit in a pocket with a ziplock
Might be nice for the summer

One of the best small cameras ever.

Re: Cycling Camera
Don't ask me how I know,* but even though the Canons (S95, S100) are not advertised as water-resistant, they hold up pretty well to moisture (as in, being left out overnight and working fine after a light rain).
* A word of advice—be careful letting your kids use your cameras...

Yeah it is wonderful. I picked it up a few years ago for a steal in Germany! It continues to amaze me with the photo quality it produces
