Something We Can All Agree On
I just saw the preview for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. I am a sucker for these sorts of fantasy magical movies. I really like stories. Good old fashioned (& magical) stories. It doesn't have to be for kids - I liked Guillermo del Toro's Labyrinth and The Shape of Water. I liked Jim Henson's Dark Crystal. I don't know if they are good bad mediocre excellent. Just that they have a story I can sink into. And I really liked the first Fantastic Beasts, so I was thinking well, I'll need to go see this.
November 16th?! The film isn't even going to be out until November 16th?! WTF?! Do they really need that much time to wind people up so they have guaranteed audience mayhem? And entire generation of children will have been born by then. And another generation of elderly will have died peacefully (or not) in their sleep.
To heck with election reform, I think movies should only get two weeks to promote themselves and then they absolutely have to be released on the first day after that two week period. Makes no sense. I mean, I'm not obsessed with seeing this movie and will gnaw another notch in the breakfast table every day until November 16, but seriously November 16 is kind of ludicrous in simple reality so sort of way.
And album releases should be the same. The date an album shows up on iTunes for preorder is so distant from its actual release date that not even a computer can remember the preorder (of course, this is also because Apple sucks but...)
And if elected....
BTW, here is the preview.

Jorn,
I really like the summary of Del Torro's reason for The Shape of Water. It is not fantastical at all.
Here is the best video I could find this time around. There is a better source out there for resolution.
I just love his brevity in any format.
Director Guillermo del Toro explains how 'The Shape of Water' is about today
Sorry to drag back reality.
Re: Something We Can All Agree On
Today's movie trailers show too much of the movie.
Spielberg did great trailers ... E.T., Close Encounters, Jaws ... enough to know you want to see it without actually seeing it.
In closing, theaters that charge a bunch for Junior Mints but offer them from the freezer will get my candy money.

But they can still be fantastical and real, escapist and truthful. That's how to tell stories to power without losing your head.
I just think that putting out a trailer eight months before the release date is pfft.

"What makes a man a man?" a friend of mine once wondered. Is it his origins? The way he comes to life? I don't think so. It's the choices he makes. Not how he starts things, but how he decides to end them.

Nothing to argue with here.
I try to avoid movie trailers.
I show up as late as possible to the theater to avoid as much as possible.
I loved them as a kid.
I prefer to go into a movie blind.
I trust a director over cast, reviews, special effects, budget.........
It is pretty amazing that 4 out of the 5 recent director winners are of Mexican origin.
