I've replaced my 15 year old Chorus cranks with record, so thought I'd have a go at polishing one of the old ones up.

I did this with some chorus guys on my commuter - what solution did you use to get it started. I did the whole bit on a buffing wheel and it took several evenings and I was sneezing black for a day. I'd like to do the rest of the silver bits, but need an easier way.
The solution is sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) in water. I used about 1 tablespoon in a litre of water. It attacks the anodising. Once the whole part starts bubbling, you're through the anodising.
Anything applied to the polished crankarms or just future visits to be occasionally polished again?

This is the frame as it arrived from the guy I bought it from. Stubby stem with spacers.
This is how I am riding it today.

Two things, my pics came out after and before. I am still working on my posting skills and Musegrave's bike gives me vapors too. Please share the dimensions on this bike.

Fixing up old bikes and old cars? My kind of thread. Will start with the oldest in age but newest to me mid 60's Raleigh DL-1 that fell in my lap a little while ago. It had me at "Rod brakes" It was complete with original Miller lighting system, Brooks saddle and right down to the Dunlop tires. Took it apart, cleaned out all the dried grease and time added gunk, buffed up the paint and chrome a bit. Replaced the Brooks as the leather on the original was a bit too old .Attachment 102197Attachment 102196Attachment 102195Attachment 102198Attachment 102199Attachment 102200Attachment 102201
