An odd subject perhaps, but I've always been interested in the history that abounds in old cemeteries and in particular, some of the structures such as obelisks and mausoleums. Often when on a ride that passes a cemetery, I'll stop and look for some interesting stones and structures. There's quite a lot of work and detail that goes into carving stone, especially when the work was done 150 years or so ago.
I was pretty early for a client appointment yesterday, and as it was a nice day, I took a stroll thorough a Civil War era (I know...nothing compared to my European friends here) cemetery that abuts my client's campus. There were mini-mausoleums everywhere one looked and the grandaddy obelisk (10m high) was for a doctor and his wife from the late 1870's. No roses that I could find though, as there are people who travel to old cemeteries looking for cuttings from heirloom roses that could be 100 or so years old. Insect resistant as they are not hybrids, the plants by themselves can tell a great story if listened to.

Re: Cemeteries
Nice pictures Robert. My ex wife (that's a whole 'nother story) loved cemeteries. Any vacation required a side trip to at least one. She loved New Orleans.

Re: Cemeteries
Great pictures. My family's beach house included a pre-civil war cemetary. It took us many years to clear away the overgrowth and right the headstones but it was worth it. Locals started to take interest once we got it presentable. This was a burial ground for slaves who were sent to the farm for breaking. Awful history not made any better telling the story. We all felt that maybe doing the right thing was long past due. Never forget, it's part of what cemeteries are. Grandpah on mom's side is buried in Arlington. That place is one of the most peaceful spots in DC.

Re: Cemeteries
When I'm out riding somewhere on the back roads I take note of the graveyards I pass, some so well taken care of with nothing nearby it makes me think someone comes there to remember.

I spent countless hours riding around the Homewood Cemetery when I lived in PGH, pretty place and no cars.

I really like this, hubby and wife divided by a wall, as one was protestant and the other catholic.
Yet, they can shake hands

Re: Cemeteries
Swan Point Cemetary in Providence is really coolm. I'd post photos, but they don't allow photography on the grounds and they actually have people walking around to enforce it. The corner with the oldest plots has some incredible headstone designs.

Re: Cemeteries
There's a couple really nice ones around here.
Mt. Auburn gets all the press, but Forest Hills, which is part of my regular morning loops, is pretty darn lovely too.

My long time riding bud passed away seven years ago this month in a freak accident while on vacation. Among his many accomplishments, he was an Army veteran, serving a few tours in Vietnam. He was laid to rest in this military cemetery, which is located 10-12 miles South of Pittsburgh. A truly amazing place for a truly amazing fellow.

Re: Cemeteries
I have always been a big fan of the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. First of all, we are approaching that magical time of the year when the horsemen will Haunt the Bridge in the Old Dutch Burying Grounds.
Secondly, the many robber barons who are buried there have left a mark about their personality. Andrew Carnegie's grave site are two simple Celtic Crosses for him and his wife, with his two faithful servants buried nearby. On the other hand, William Rockefeller's Mausoleum is more fit for a king.

Re: Cemeteries
I like Forest Hills a lot, and I like that the concept is based around actually enjoying your time there. I also visited the Woodland Cemetery in Sweden, its a favorite amongst architects: Skogskyrkogarden - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I'll dig through my photos at some point, but I liked the way people were buried in the trees, with the undergrowth cleared.

Re: Cemeteries
Rolled around the City of Miami Cemetery today. It's located just north of Downtown and is the final resting place to some of the biggest names in South Florida history, including Julia Tuttle, who founded Miami. i also never realized until today that the monument in one of the roundabouts (pic below) is a memorial to fallen Confederate Soldiers. One day I'll head back with a real camera.
