It is pretty amazing. I was at a lecture with one of the scientists involved in research where they were mapping out the monkeys' brains. One of the aha moments came when they had the monkey connected to their computers and one of the techs moved his hand across the monkey's field of view in order to adjust something, and the brain location they were mapping showed a reaction. Then one of the scientists moved the monkey's own hand into its field of view, and the brain location lit up like a sparkler. So then they knew they had a region that was very special, not only connecting the brain and a specific part of the body but also connecting the sight of the hand to this region in the brain that then connected back to the hand.

This would not work one me. It is unlikely they can find the two single motor neurons which control "push pedal down" and "breath".
