Austin, TX - What to do?
I'm not bringing a bicycle.
How do I get a ticket for a party boat on Lake Travis? I can only find places where I can rent an entire boat?
I'm going with a buddy so it would be much more fun to join a bunch of others on a large boat.
Barton Springs is supposed to be pretty awesome so we will go there. For nightlight, we will hit up Congress, and
W 6th.
Any other recommendations?

Congress Street Bridge at dusk. About a bazillion bats mass exit for evening feeding. Its pretty incredible.
Sandy's Hamburgers 603 Barton Springs Rd - eat out back on the picnic tables, fantastic.
Barton Creek Trail - there a couple big rope swings that let you swing out and jump into the water like a Mountain Dew commercial from the '70s.

Re: Austin, TX - What to do?
We visited a little while back for a wedding.
BBQ - we went to Stiles Switch, and it was awesome. Ran by one of Aaron Franklin's former pitmasters. We liked it. We also went to a taco place called...Mi Madre Tacos, or Tacos Madre, or something like that. Also good.
The LBJ Presidential Library is in Austin and was a very worthwhile place to visit. First (and so far only) presidential library I've been to.
We also visited Mellow Johnny's, 'cause, when in Rome...
We didn't get to see the bats...that was a disappointment, sounds cool, we just didn't have time.

Re: Austin, TX - What to do?
It’s summertime. Bring some extra patience wherever you venture off to.
Then hit up Curra’s Grill for some good food and margaritas.

Re: Austin, TX - What to do?
The Congress avenue bats. Seriously cool stuff. That would be on the top of my list.
I always liked El Chilito for tacos. Mother's on Duval has vegetarian fare if you're into that. Magnolia Cafe if you're up past your bedtime and need some food.
What time of year are you going? The heat...

Whatever you do, make sure it is weird.

Re: Austin, TX - What to do?
I'll be the out of towner who says burger bar on Congress is just what it says and a good lunch stop. Stand and eat and drink a shake and watch attention-deprived people go by in exotic cars.
Mellow johnny's is ok but light on summer weight caps. Thought I might find rothera. Juan pelota coffee is good.
I've only been down on business so no time for bbq tour, and wrong season for bats.

I'm leaving in 13 hours. Shorts, swimsuits, and t-shirts only.

281 Club outside on Marble Falls. Its red, lack windows, and has beer and skanks. My Grand Dad took me there when I was like 9 years old to watch him drink bourbon and waters. And also to be the designated driver.....
weapon optional.

Re: Austin, TX - What to do?
My second recommendation is to float the guadalupe river. Its the greatest thing ever to do. And I am serious about that.

Go see Jawbreaker and Lemuria on July 13th.

Mi Madre's on Manor road, the migas plate is good.
Stile's Switch is pretty damn good, also Micklethwaite Bbq is awesome (it's a trailer tucked back in a lot) if that's the area you're in, East Side of IH35/12th St.
Vera Cruz All Natural is probably the best taco joint (trailer) in Austin, the Migas taco is nuts.
We like to hang at Barton Springs and then I'm usually able to convince the wife to go to Chuy's right around the corner there, some straight up Tex-Mex, drink a Texas (Mexican) Martini there, ask for a bowl of Green Chile sauce to dip your chips in.
If the Congress area starts to feel boring, I recommend making your way over to the bars/trailers on East 5th and 6th streets. Perhaps The Violet Crown Social Club, they used to have the Via313 trailer there but I think it moved, that pizza is good by the way, sometimes they have Hop Stoopid on draught, nice beer list.

DCT, you've got a good list started. Quick question. Will you have a car for a short drive to surrounding areas, or are you sticking to Austin proper?

Re: Austin, TX - What to do?
If you can make a trip to Fredericksburg (about 90 minutes), the War in the Pacific Museum is great. North of Fburg is Enchanted Rock, it takes about half an hour to hike to the top and is a great place to take in the sunset.

I meant I've only been there during the wrong season for bats. Except the elusive cold, windy, and rainy bat.
