Re: Finally Bought Some Land
I was in an RV park in Panama City Beach on the 18th next to a man and wife from Mobile. He was a construction worker on a larger project which was attempting to meet the state guideline at the time which precluded groups larger than 10 congregating. He figured the job would be shut down. There were many itinerant workers in this RV park. I was up at 5:30 and saw them heading out to work- clearly subcontractors given the markings on the trucks. Subcontractors are more likely to be respectful of each other given they work in crews.
As I returned from the valley today I saw a few houses in process with a few people working. It can be done carefully and where I live people are taking the possibility of infection very seriously to judge by the use of gloves and masks in town.
I don't think construction workers are any more given to expectorating than cyclists and as for toilets, any public toilet can be pretty rank, no matter where it is.

Bad carpenter joke:
Two carpenters were working on the side of a house. All day long one guy was having to fix the other guy's mistakes and getting more and more frustrated. Finally mistake guy nails a long piece of trim upside down and the other guy loses it. "What the #*@(# are you doing? That's *#$)(@ upside down." Mistake guy looks at him and says, "Whatever man. You fix it if it bothers you so much. I gotta take a dump." So he climbs down and gets in the Porta-Jon. The other guy climbs down, gets into his truck and knocks the Porta-Jon over completely. Just then the GC drives up and sees one guy crawling out of the broken Porta-Jon, completely covered, and one guy sitting in his truck a few feet away, engine still revving. The GC points at the guy in the Porta-Jon and says, "You're fired." The guy says "Hey! He hit me with a truck! Why am I getting fired?" The GC says, "Cause you're a shitty carpenter."

My typical ride takes me past about 30 condo construction projects and I've been amazed to see them all bustling like nothing is going on. Ugh.

I saw the same thing in Brooklyn until very recently. Glad things are changing here in the state of New York

We have up until this point been obeying, if not exceeding, all requirements of government regarding the safety of everyone on the job site. That will not change.
I expect we'll get an update on job site status bright and early Monday morning.
How did things turn out?

Work is stopped. GC is hopeful work will resume by end of May, but June is more likely.

Jorn, the house looks amazing!
Forgive me if I missed it, but why is the main orientation of the house facing West? It seems that you have the utility room and main entrance facing South which I would have thought is the preferred orientation in the Northern hemisphere? Was it simply for the views and preferred outlook? Thanks.

I think I may review this thread from the start. It will fulfill a bit of my desire to have a place in the woods.

Thanks! Yes view primarily. But positioning was also about managing thermal gain from sunlight. Because of the huge windows in the front and the popup room above with its glass, the design actually warms up reasonably well. Not an easy bake oven but not a refrigerator either. The shape of the front porch roof is also to control the sun effect. There is some strange system of equations for calculating this that has been explained to me, but I just trust that it works. And this winter, without any heat, the popup room on the roof was comfortable. I mean, it sort of doesn’t make a lick of sense that all that glass would work that way but somehow it does. We’re not getting rid of the heat though!

I hope at some point people will actually be able to stop by and see it in person.

Tried to find an angle where the unfinished bits are minimized.

Looks cool.
What's the plan for when it's finished? Are you going to write another book? Or would you like me to buy a plot of land here and we could trade. I'd get a decent place to live (and get to meet a lot of Vsalonistas) and you'd get to feel your life has continued purpose. I'd be prepared to live without a sense of purpose...
Re: Finally Bought Some Land
First I think I am going to spend a lot of time on the porch with coffee. After that we’ll see.
