Club here is having an exploratory gravel ride tomorrow, starting from the oddest little one-man show brewpub you've ever seen. It's in an old school in a little "town" out in the middle of the cottonfields east of here. One guy does everything out there I think. Cooks, waits tables, brews beer, beertends. It should be a hoot.

i have a new friend who invites me to things. that's a nice feeling.
My little film club is seeing The Witch tonight. Excited.
- We've got new ideas about remodeling the first floor. That's exactly what I'd hoped would happen as we hit three-plus months in our new house. Meanwhile we have a new loveseat arriving this weekend, and the bathroom windows are getting waterproofed next week.
- I talked with my daughter for over an hour last night, catching up on her classes, her team, and my vacation. We agreed we need to talk more often!
- It's getting lighter, it's getting warmer. I think the morning rides could commence next week.
First commute of the new year! Actually first ride outside. 29 deg. Took a couple of miles to get the core temp up, it was a hoot after that. My legs didn't agree, nor did my lungs, but I smiled the entire ride.
Warmer tomorrow!!
1. Found out today I'm up next in Crumpton's queue. Might have been the first to show up with a Crumpton Type 5 disc! Anyway, I'm putting it off for another year though as I've got a big move coming up. Maybe in time for Shimano 9100
2. Going for a windy and wet ride tomorrow... on one of the previous America Cup race boats. Going to be a little different from those little dinghies I've sailed in the past.
I'm listening to waves, sort of OK island music (you think they know Little Village's "Do You Want My Job"?) it's warm and I have a very nice wine buzz on.
Rode the moto to work today. Nice as a change, the moto is fun. Baseball game tonight. West Virginia at Hawaii. There will be a cold beer or two. Ride tomorrow for a bit. Then some yard work.
Cycling has traditionally had a sense of style, but since Cippo and Pantani I think we've lost a bit.

Fortunately, the young guns at the Minnesota State Hockey Tourney this week brought their A-Game and set a strong example. In case you need a glossary to the terminology, you can find it here.

So Tuesday evening I get a text from my 15-year-old daughter... She wants to talk to just me about something, "not too serious". The mind reels.
I pick her up from school on Wednesday. She starts into a circuitous talk... I say "This is about a boy, right?" She goes silent and turns red.
Turns out she wants to ask me if it's okay for her to ask a guy to her school's Tolo (Sadie Hawkins for those who aren't from this area) dance. I'm actually okay with this. Though he's two years older, he's from her church, which tends to crank out some pretty decent kids. Anyway, I tell her I'm okay with it, I just want to meet him before they go.
I know some people think that they grow up too fast, and want to hold onto their children's childhood. My view is that I'm raising her to be a functioning adult, and this is a step along the way. That was the goal all along, right? Why be sad that you're accomplishing that feat?
So two weeks from tomorrow she'll be going on this date. Looks like I'll be the driver for the evening as well. I'm okay with that.
Good job. I've found those dad-daughter interactions to be so difficult and, ultimately, so satisfying.
Here's a preview 7-8 years down the road: Our daughter (a senior in college) called us Monday with good news. Her boyfriend (also a senior) has been offered, and accepted, a job in DC. Which is exactly where she wants to be. So it looks like all the theoretical talk about them moving in together is about to get real.
He's a great young man. She's a great young woman. And it looks like they're about to join hands and enter the world of functioning adulthood together.
Spring is really here, the sun is shining, the tea is hot.

And it's Friday.
Now if I could only get the screens off my windows without facilities becoming agitated.
Slowly coming together. Finally got the logo on the door today. Need to repaint soon. The green has gotta go.

Brand new 10 year old Garmin showed up today. After hardly touching a bike for +8 months the numbers don't lie. The scale says I'm too skinny and the Garmin I'm horribly out of shape. I'm taking this to mean I can eat as much as I want and ride more than is acceptable.
Equally happy to discover my resting heart rate is still low (healthy) but not below 40 or anything (dangerous). Relative had open heart surgery today, went well, that put me on the alert for any troubles.
My flight from SEA-ORD had a flat tire so my connection to PIT this evening is effed. However, while still on the ground in SEA, our oldest called to say that she received her first grad school acceptance. Needless to say I'm extremely pumped for her so a night in O'Hare is a small price to pay to offset a potential grump.
I flew next to a fellow with a 13 month old son on his lap this morning and I pinched myself too, Jonathan. I'm too young to have kids this old, right? Yes, four years ago I posted about her being accepted to college and now this. Keep your fingers crossed as she has an interview coming up in two weeks at the University of Washington, which is her dream gig.
12 miles from home I noticed my rear tire felt a bit soft. When I pulled over the first thing I see is the entire exposed section of tire is riding on threads. The rest wasn't much better but it's just barely losing air. While I'm spinning the tire to get the valve where I want it my finger hits a 1/4" wire. Somehow it didn't deflate the tube when I pulled it out. With a few stops for air I rolled up to my house on a fully inflated tire with no tread left. Full value expended, it is sitting in the pile to be recycled after thousands of enjoyable miles.
