Both awesome choices, but both come at a much higher price. I don't think you can find either for less than $3K used.

Wrists, uh, dainty.
Suits are boxy shoulders and slim-ish fit, so british.
I like this for a casual watch. I think for a first watch, I'll probably get something that I can wear during the both the day and evening.
I ask my watchmaker friend to whip something together... IF I can afford him.
Chasea - Hard to beat this watch for what you are describing - casual, small wrists, brit suits. I keep clicking on your link myself. Hmm. And I freely admit that it was kind of a foppish thing for me to say - euro watches with euro suits. But hey, I'm funny like that. I don't like euro shoes with American sack suits, either.
Cody - You're right, the used Panerai are probably out of this price range, but the IWC's are there at sub-$2k. The big watch movement has created a buyers market for those of us with smaller, uh, "dainty" wrists. I have a 6.6 in wrist, so I'm digging the watches in the 36-39mm range. For example, you can find good deals on the Mark XVI and the old Explorer I. Here is one for example:

For anyone looking for a decent used Speedmaster Pro, this is what you're up against:
Omega Speedmaster Professional "Moon" Watch - 3570.50 | eBay
$1825 for a watch that needs immediate attention. Not sure how serious the problem is, but it's not minor. And this isn't some collector's model, this is just a run of the mill "modern" Speedmaster. A Speedy is on my shortlist (along with an IWC Mark XVI, and a couple others). The premium for a new one doesn't look bad when you see these auction results.
watchrecon is another good resource. I like it better than EDS, as you can cull results by brand (without having to use keywords) and, in addition to a picture, shows the price of the listing without having to look at the listing.
I have owned dozens of fine watches, and none have held up as well as my Omega Seamaster America's Cup. Aside from the 18kt WG bezel and some fancy engraving, it is all standard automatic Seamaster. I have had multiple models of Rolex, IWC, Tag, Omega, etc. I really believe that for an everyday watch, a Seamaster is tough to beat.
Finally arrived today:

NICE Dustin. You won't regret it.
Very nice watch Dustin. If you want an America's Cup Limited Edition Seamaster to go with it, let me know.

Nice one Dustin! I like that and I'm sure it will withstand much abuse.

That Sinn is sweet. You guys in the Salon are always speaking to my addictions.......bikes and watches.
Anyone have any input on the IWC portuguese stainless model? I think it's ref. 3714 or something likethat.
Congrats Cody. Looking for U1 myself. Great looking piece!
Oh man, that Sinn U1 is a classy looking watch. Understated looks and super solid.
Nice pickup!
-Joe
You are correct, it is IWC Ref. 3714.
I own it in stainless steel, silver dial, rose gold numbers, coupled with blued markers for the subdials.
The watch is spectacular, yet tends towards the more formal side of the wristwatch spectrum. It is truly a joy to wear.
Thanks everybody!
Congrats, Cody! And should we say Happy Birthday, too? ;-) Wow, those Sinn divers are such a distinctive watch. Looks like something out of the MOMA or MAD in NY. But seriously, only one photo? C'mon!

Any recommendations on online vintage watch retailers?
I have been scanning vintagewatchrestoration and connoisseur of time... anything else I should pay attention too? Looking for a 1950s Omega/Jaeger LeCoultre/IWC etc.
A great watch, a weird movie, and almost certainly the best Bond theme song of all time. Also one of only a handful of songs that have both an awesome original version, and an awesome cover version.
I think this is about as close as I'll get to wearing what Bond wore; a cruddy picture of my Sinn on a Bond nato (the post Blue-Ray Bond, not the skunk stripe model).

Wow, how did I miss this one? Congrats! What a classic, and with such a cool history. When I was a kid I knew an RAF Battle of Britain veteran who wore an old Rolex airman's watch. I've got my eye on a no-date Rolex myself . . . someday. The date function just seems a little unnecessary in the smart phone days. And I think the dial looks cleaner. Thanks for sharing.
I've had this pocket watch for as long as I can remember.

While home over christmas, I started looking at it, and finally figured it out. I unscrewed the case back and saw this:

The serial number dates it to 1895. It's been passed along down to me for a few generations. I was rather excited. I wound it up and it seems to be keeping time well, so I'm thinking about getting a chain/ strap for it. Anyone have any recommendations? Would prefer leather.
have not flipped through the whole thread, but can't understand the fixation with big watches. on the other hand, maybe it's sour grapes - i have wrists like a 10 yo girl...
and if no one's linked to this yet, great watch blog
Watches Worth Knowing About - HODINKEE
I agree with you on the large watches. The classic Patek Philippe is around 36mm or less. I really think the larger chronographs pushed the size out to 40mm+ and now you have freakish thick watches at 50mm.
When I look at watches, I have the soft spot for the classic Patek but I really think the watches by FP Journe are pretty slick.
That Hodinkee site is dangerous...
