4 months in, wearing daily, I still don't have a bad word to say about this. A steal for the $$.

Re: automatic/mechanical watches on a budget.
Just FYI, I had some "issues" with CountyComm customer service. Just absolutely terrible, down to many ignored emails and paypal dispute. It's a great deal for sure as long as your order goes smoothly, but there's other good value automatics out there too.

Re: automatic/mechanical watches on a budget.
Yo Musgrave....did you get it yet?

Re: automatic/mechanical watches on a budget.

Re: automatic/mechanical watches on a budget.
sorry to hear that. hope it worked out in the end.
i haven't seen that many other 'value' automatics in the same price range other than seikos; any favorites you could share?

Re: automatic/mechanical watches on a budget.
They've become increasingly hard to find but if you stumble across the one on the right you should be able to easily pick it up for less than $300. It's a SandY (Stocker & Yale) 490 which has an ETA 2801 manual wind movement. I've owned a number of high end watches over the years and this cheap mil-issue was the most accurate of the lot. The only downside is that it's around 37mm across. The one on the left is a SandY 590 which is quartz.

Re: automatic/mechanical watches on a budget.
Gave Mom the military style Seiko 5 for Christmas last. She's still loving it.
I still wear the orange one this month and the pepsi next month (seiko divers). letting them wind down for longer service live eh.
kinda dig the yellow face, but then ... ... ... effing never ever see a used auto 'round here in pawn shops or antique malls, i've been looking for years.
i have to stop now. bubye.

PMWF is a nice board for the sub-$1000 WIS.

A friend of mine has an Orient Mako with the yellow face...solid piece, and at ~$200 USD is on my list.
Attachment 44783
I really like my Bathys. It's a bargain even at three times the price of the Mako.

Re: automatic/mechanical watches on a budget.
This Tsunami is fantastico! Running like a top, 6-days in it has only gained 4 seconds.

Thank you, that was me asking about the Steinharts. Great to hear feedback. The more I look at them, the more I like. There is no way I will ever afford a true milsub, a red sub, or a Steve McQueen GMT, so the "homage" aspect speaks to me.

Re: automatic/mechanical watches on a budget.
Brillrick
Bias perhaps, but my fav sub-homage is still Bill Yao's MKII. Can be tough to track down though. OWC is also getting great reviews.
-
Re: automatic/mechanical watches on a budget.
OWC popped up on the radar after I'd picked up the Ocean 1 Vintage Red, for about $400 shipped I got an ETA 2824-2 movement, domed sapphire crystal and a really nice bracelet. My friend at The Jewelry store commented on how nicely built it was when he sized it for me. As he said lots of folks make watches to look like something else..they aren't all as nicely done as this one. I'd love to find Blackwater but the price has crept up on them.
Where's pics of the new watch btw??
-
Re: automatic/mechanical watches on a budget.
Haven't taken any yet, will try and get one soon. First thing I did when I opened the box was take it off the bracelet and put on a proper Maratac NATO ;-)

Agreed, I had a Yao-modified Seiko diver for a while. I sold it across the hall to Vaxn8tr back in 2006. Great watch and the newer MKIIs are even better.

I got to handle one of the Yao Explorer II ones a couple weeks ago. I think it was in the LRRP family, as far as Yao's names go. This one didn't have the McQueen dial, but a more sterile one, and the watch was super nice. I was actually amazed at how nice it was, since a lot of the homage watches I've seen leave quite a bit of quality on the table to hit a price point. I'd really love to find a Blackwater/Paradive one day.

I could really use one of these:

Seiko Spirit SBPP007 (JDM).
Anybody know where I can get one? They are Japan-only and apparently aren't made very often.

Seiya Japan is probably your best bet.

Nothing listed there right now, I'll keep checking...

Might be worth emailing them to see what they could track one down for you. I can't tell from casually searching if it has been made in a while or not. Weird that there aren't any used ones floating around, either.

You can grab some really cool older watches if you're diligent about poking your head in every jewelry shop and pawn shop you pass. I wish I had a spare $1500 to grab that gold JLC memovox I found, but alas. Loving this one.

Vostok Amphibia - the finest Russian automatic timepiece that $66 (including shipping) can buy. Showcasing legendary Russian workmanship, it just oozes class and sophistication.
It's my every day watch and people tell me it is easily mistaken for a watch that costs $10-$20 more.
-
Re: automatic/mechanical watches on a budget.
Vostoks are awesome. I had this one for a little while, but sent it to my mom cause she really liked it.

Seiko
Heads-up, there are some nice Seiko 5 autos on the flash-sale site "Ruelala" (who comes up with these names?) today. $90ish. I'd link but they're behind a password. You can email me for an invitation if you want, but I don't think this is the place for affiliate links, and you can probably just sign up on your own so they can avoid giving me ten bucks.

There is a forum member who works there I believe. I shipped something he bought from me to his business address.
You can sign up for free though - no invite needed. Shipping appears to be $9.95 for anything you buy within 30 days.
