I had this all weekend. My kids have a new favorite car. They LOVED it. Not one complaint from long legged daughter about climbing into the rear seat - other than "not enough burnouts".

Honestly, I liked it too, far more than I expected to. Good sounds, changes direction fairly well and even comfortable. It actually works very well as car.

Honestly, I liked it too, far more than I expected to. Good sounds, changes direction fairly well and even comfortable. It actually works very well as car.

Let's suppose someone was dumb enough to take a job that is 45 miles from one's home and required driving. Mileage is paramount. Bluetooth for my iPhone would be good to have. I'm kind of partial to heated seats, but could easily let that slide. Other than that, no criteria whatsoever. Cars are appliances to me.

VW Golf diesel? BMW 335d? Something else?

I have a new VW jetta wagon diesel that meets those requirements. I like german cars for many reasons and the VW works for me although my B5 passat was better in some ways. The TDIs are great for highway and if you want a high efficiency real car. If you only want pure milage the hybrid options might be better as a prius will get better milage in mixed use than a TDI.
That said if milage is the only criteria look at the volt as it will go 40 miles or so electric only so if you could charge at work too you would use almost no gas at all. I rode in one recently and it is a bit plasticy-modern but seemed nice enough especially if you are not super tall. The telsa would be the high rent more awesome version.

What's generating power in your neck of the woods? Around here it's all coal. The emission numbers show a plug in running on coal generated electricity is about the same as a gasoline car that gets 30mpg.

I think VW TDI gets it for ergonomics, drivability, and mpg. The initial cost of a TDI, and of course the diesel itself, is more than a gas engine; but with a long ass commute like yours, you'll quickly come out ahead. And the newer ones are Bluetooth enabled.

I've always assumed it comes from safe, secure, vital Indian Point, but it's a fair question. But I think I'm going to get a Golf. I've liked them since my dad's friend had a mk I GTI when I was a wee lad. Nice car.

Yeah, I liked the 3 I drove, but it's just going to be me every day. Big car seems like a waste. We'll keep the Hondyssey for when we transport the kids.

New York State has one of the lowest emissions coefficients from electricity in the entire country. Lots of nuclear and hydro.

The GTD looks awesome, though.

Patrick Snijers is actually back in a BMW this year. Running the Belgian c'ship in a 135i. Last year he ran a Mini Cooper WRC. There's really high-quality in-car from his team Schmid Racing of the BMW on YouTube.

Although a 2011 Golf TDi with a tune and a shift kit is sorta sweet. Not that I'd know anything about that ;>).

If you want an appliance get Honda Civic. The mileage is nearly as good as a VW TDI, gas is cheaper than diesel and it only has one catalytic converter compared to the three on the TDI ie. less complication. The cost of routine major services (40K, 80K and 100K) of VW TDIs has probably maxed out more credit cards than Rodeo Dr. shopping sprees.

I have owned and loved German cars but the Civic Si Coupe has Honda + manual + bluetooth and other silly electronics to its credit...
