Re: Saloner seriously hurt doing the ice bucket challenge
This is getting old fast...
For the Docs here, is it normal for this kind of injury to cause some depression and how long does it normally last? Minor change in personality? I don't really know how to explain this, I don't feel depressed per say, but I am feeling really...uh...unattached to stuff if that makes sense. Unmaterialistic maybe. Nothing I own really matters to me right now - bikes, watches (even the new MKII is a big 'meh' at the moment), guns, none of it matters. Also feeling really un-patient with my girls, that's gotta be some sort of depression.
Is this normal?

Give it time my pal. I've had several concussions and it's scary stuff. Hang in there and rest. Let your body heal. In the words of Red Green "I'm pulling for ya."

Dealing with traumatic circumstances (not an injury to me, but to a family member) left me feeling exactly as you describe, with the addition of a loss of appetite. I am no doctor, so I don't know if what you are feeling is psychological or physical, but I will say as my situation stabilized, I started to feel normal again. I could laugh, felt hungry, wanted a beer, and felt like riding again. Hang in there bro.
Re: Saloner seriously hurt doing the ice bucket challenge
The last time I smacked my head, I became much more aggressive, probably not even in a bad way. I'm back to being a mouse, though. Give it time, and be patient with yourself.

Yes: Concussion Definition - Diseases and Conditions - Mayo Clinic
Quote:
Some symptoms of concussions may be immediate or delayed in onset by hours or days after injury, such as:
Concentration and memory complaints
Irritability and other personality changes
Sensitivity to light and noise
Sleep disturbances
Psychological adjustment problems and depression
Disorders of taste and smell

Potential complications of concussion include:
Epilepsy. People who have had a concussion double their risk of developing epilepsy within the first five years after the injury.
Cumulative effects of multiple brain injuries. Evidence exists indicating that people who have had multiple concussive brain injuries over the course of their lives may acquire lasting, and even progressive, impairment that limits their ability to function.
Postconcussion syndrome. Some people begin having postconcussion symptoms — such as headaches, dizziness and thinking difficulties — a few days after a concussion. Symptoms may continue for weeks to a few months after a concussion.
Post-traumatic headaches. Some people experience headaches within a week to a few months after a brain injury.
Post-traumatic vertigo. Some people experience a sense of spinning or dizziness for days, week or months after a brain injury.
Second impact syndrome. Experiencing a second concussion before signs and symptoms of a first concussion have resolved may result in rapid and usually fatal brain swelling.
After a concussion, the levels of brain chemicals are altered. It usually takes about a week for these levels to stabilize again. However, recovery time is variable, and it's important for athletes never to return to sports while they're still experiencing signs and symptoms of concussion.

Yes, give it time. In general, folks with concussions heal well. That said, there are many variables that complicate the picture. If your symptoms persist, speak with your physician to see if you can get it sorted out. A concussion can be a frustrating experience, but again, there's ample scientific evidence to suggest that you'll get back to normal.
Re: Saloner seriously hurt doing the ice bucket challenge
Having had a couple of rough concussions, you want to give yourself time. Rest and sleep more than you think you need. It'll take time but if all goes well most (or all) of those symptoms will clear up in time. Could easily be a longer time that you'd like. I couldn't ride for quite awhile after the worst one, the minimal vibration from the road gave me a headache.
Re: Saloner seriously hurt doing the ice bucket challenge
The simple fact that youre recognizing these feelings exist is important and a good sign imo.

Having survived literally totaling a Chevrolet Chevette with my head I can say you'll be a little goofy for an unpredictable time. Me? 'Bout a year or so. Time and takin' it easy are my prescription. Avoid recreational chemical use if you play that game until you're sure everything's good.

I know this is a little old now, but I felt like I should add.
I felt very vanilla for a while after my concussions. In the beginning I don't even think I was that bummed about not being able to do much for a while, I was just blah. I don't think I even worked on my bikes for a while, one had blood on it for a month after my crash I' pretty sure.
Expect your head to feel different, its good that your noticing it.
Don't rush back to doing anything higher risk, I did, and regretted it. I had two within a 2 month span, one was very bad, and I still don't have memories of that day.
