Timepieces

Here's my Universal Geneve. I inherited it in 1985. This was my grandfather's watch and I believe he acquired it in the 1950s. Not exactly sure. It was a gift to him from a good friend. I remember him wearing it all the time. He was a fine woodworker and carpenter and wore it while he worked. I really think it's a sharp looking watch. Very simple and no date feature, which I prefer. It's self-winding, which I'm not crazy about, but I can live with it.

Anyway, it needs to be serviced. Can anyone recommend where I can get this done? Also, he replaced the crystal with a plastic one (I have no idea if the original was glass, but assume it was) and I'd like to get a glass version installed while it's being serviced.

I absolutely love this watch and would really like to wear it everyday, just like my Grampie.

I like the new 41mm DLC more size wise, but this has it going on with the matte DLC.

Will look at the Vantage. Might just go back to my old Tag 2000 medium face. That's the right size for me.

Very nice choice. Understated quality with some subtle bling in those tritium tubes. Oris makes a somewhat similar BC3 but it has a lesser PVD finish.

I stumbled upon this a few days ago. It really speaks to me...until I read that it has a 45mm case. Flav-0-Flav. The blue color is part of a very limited edition and cannot be easily found. If it had a 42mm case, I would be all over this.Attachment 54487 Beauty.

It may not wear as big as that number suggests. The somewhat elliptical shape could play a role in the larger measured size. I'd definitely try one on before writing it off, especially as you like it so much.

Another vote for the large Maratac automatic.

I decided to look for a 2nd / less costly watch to give my daily wear Fortis Flieger a rest.

I'd been wearing the Fortis since '95 with a 2 or 3 crystal replacements, and one movement replacement due to an accidental dunking. Long story short, the Maratac is water resistant, features unique crown placement (which I find more comfortable), and induces absolutely zero anxiety about damage or loss due to low cost.

It's my all-purpose / go-to watch for just about any use.

I don't get to excited about watches any more. Work with then enough and they just get to be stuff.

I know it is just the sideshow however the wristband is not exactly chopped liver.

so, I want to own some basic watch tools.
I have an excellent watch repair shop nearby
but for simple jobs (taking out a link, spring bar removal/installation)
I'd like to have some on hand to satisfy my inner nerd.

can someone point me in the direction of some quality watch tools?
like the hozan or felco of the watch world..
I'd like to start with a screwdriver that small enough for the screws in my bracelet, spring bar tool, and
whatever tool that would work with these tiny bracelet adjusters that I have (sorry, dont know the lingo)
there are 4 holes near the clasp. you can choose any for micro sizing. looks like a tiny spring bar inside.

That would be the place that I would start.
I would also say to buy a very good set of screwdrivers. Bergeon!
A good set of tweezers, and a Visor or loop and holder. Watch knife.

As far as tools go, well it depends on how much you want to get into it.
Case opener, movement holder, It really depends on what you want to do.

I would also A small set of punches. Please don't use the screwdrivers as a punch.

the rolex tool that used to come with the sea dweller is an excellent item. screwdriver for bracelet sizing on one side, pin punch on the other side. a great tool that gets used on all of my watches. they pup up on ebay all the time. for the home watch guy who occasionally sizes a bracelet, or needs the punch, this is the tool to own.

2) it gains 3+ minutes per day

Doesn't do me much good as a watch...

Those work great on Rolex, but the punch is to big for a lot of other case holes and braclets, as is the screwdriver.
But it's a handy tool for Rolex sport watches.

Gaining 3+ minutes per day is a sign of a larger problem. Regulation will not even overcome that kind of time gain. Unfortunately, it will need to be serviced or (hopefully) just demagnetized.

Recently at my work I have been informed of a program for individuals that would like to build their own watch with one of the world's most respected watch makers, Paul Gerber. For those of you who do not know who Mr. Gerber is there is a nice interview with him here- The PuristS Interviews Paul Gerber

Paul is considering a program where four participants would visit his shop and make their own watch to keep. He is looking to start this maybe as soon as October and possibly do this twice a year. Included in the program is five nights at a hotel, all meals (excluding alcohol), three days watch making with Paul and his staff, one day excursion with Paul and the watch for you to keep. Cost for the program would be around CHF:5500 per person (approx $5972.00 U.S.) Considering this is around the same cost as his current Model 42 Pilot/Synchron watch that is pretty impressive!
