Had an engineer tell me that making a suit by hand was one of the hardest tasks, period. To get fabric to hand on the human form just so, move with it and the like, made designing a bridge seem easy by comparison.
I fit all my grandfather's and great grandfather's clothes. Wish I had had a bit more respect for them when I was off in boarding school.

NPR morning edition had a spot on this tailor yesterday. He is an artist. A hand-made suit is a true luxury.

my friend tim whom i have known my whole life graduated from the bennet school for furniture making a few years ago. he also has a phd in philosophy another in history and was a really successful contracter/carpenter before he went to the bennet school. now he lives in his parent's basement and a chair he can sell for $5000 takes him months to build.....and years to sell.

I think that one of the greater problems behind this is the lack of appreciation for craft. This applies to suits, bicycles, and just about any produced or manufactured item you can name. Present company excluded (since many of us are huge fans of custom hand-built bikes) most people want the "look" without necessarily caring about the quality.
