First time I saw it, I agreed. Couldn't understand what all the hype was about. Thought it was one of the stupidest, most directionless, pointless wastes of celluloid made in recent memory. Argued incessantly with friends who are film buffs and/or actors all of whom swore up & down that it was a brilliant film with brilliant performances blah blah blah, and I thought they were just insane. That movie just plain sucked.
...and then a year later I stumbled across it again on late-night television, and I decided to suffer through it for shits & giggles...and you know what? No Country For Old Men is a great movie!!!! Yeah, the story line still offers no resolution (or much of a dramatic arc, at all, really), and it's almost painfully slow moving...but the performances by every single actor in that flick are stunning. Absolutely stunning. I stand corrected.

Regarding hate on The Big Lebowski - I can't stand the dream sequences or whatever they are. Other than that - there are some very funny lines and moments.
Re: Great movies that actually suck... (to you!)
Sometimes, it's just timing and your mood. I've f-ing hated some albums on the first listen and then given a different day or month, they became something I'd listen to a thousand times. Same with movies. I raved about how funny Big Lebowski was to a couple friends and they hated it the first time through. A couple of them can qoute the whole damn movie they now love it so much.
Re: Great movies that actually suck... (to you!)
Many people seem to really like "The Usual Suspects," but I dunno - I've fallen asleep each and every one of the probably 5 times I've tried watching it. Apparently, I just can't seem to get into it.
Re: Great movies that actually suck... (to you!)
Melancholia. Literally turned it off after three minutes of the whole "artsy slo-mo" thing at the beginning. Same thing with Tree of Life. It's like it was made by a tenth grader with a shit ton of money who wanted to show the world how artsy and/or creative he could be.
Oh for f&*k's sake. Just show the damn movie.

Re: Great movies that actually suck... (to you!)
Doing a 180 here. A movie that I love that EVERYBODY else I know who saw it either flat-out hated..or at best went "Huh?" or "Meh"; "There Will Be Blood". Frickin' awesome.
As for a supposedly Great Movie that I thought sucked..well, there'll always be "The English Patient". Good book, though.
Pop Culture Icon Movie That In Reality Blows; "The Big Lebowski", as has been said. Some funny scenes, but a movie should be more then a series of vignettes unless it's "Pulp Fiction", or "Coffee and Cigarettes" or something like that.
Seldon Seem, But Highly Recommended; "Broken Flowers". Bill Murray is fabulous. He does shattered middle-age better then anyone. Great soundtrack, too.
Re: Great movies that actually suck... (to you!)
Midnight in Paris sucked. It just did.
I'm amazed at the Big Lebowski hate. Come on, dudes.

"Tree Of Life" had about 45 seconds of astonishing filmmaking in it. Those 45 seconds were equal to anything done by Eisenstein, Kurosawa, Bergman, or Kubrick. The rest was just endless establishing shots and time-lapse. Those 45 seconds..and they weren't even consecutive, put the power of the Mother and Child bond to film. YMMV

It's not Hate, per se'..just can't get into it to the degree that many seem to. Back in the 80's...many friends of mine thought Buckaroo Banzai was just hysterical..and they could quote vast sections of the dialogue. I didn't get it.
Re: Great movies that actually suck... (to you!)
Last Tango in Paris. I couldn't care less about Brando or Schneider's characters. I guess that was Bertolucci's point, but the film was an unpleasant experience.
Buckaroo Banzai - I saw it again for the first time in decades on TV. I used to love that film like chancerider's friends, but now it just seems mildly amusing. A better experience regarding films of that ilk is The Life Aquatic, which pulls off that ensemble, dedicated team, comedy-action, metafiction thing better than Banzai. And both films have the same ending.
In contrast, a movie that I thought would suck and never match it's hype is the new Marvel's The Avengers. Went to see it in IMAX 3D and had a great time. Some snappy dialogue, they didn't forget the character development in between all of the huge explosions, and the cast is wonderfully overkill for a popcorn movie. Downey Jr., Ruffalo and Johannson are all outstanding, as is the main villain, played by Hiddleston.
Re: Great movies that actually suck... (to you!)
I've seen The Big Lebowski twice, both at the urging of friends, and both times I sat through the whole movie not getting it. Then again, I liked Johnny Mnemonic.

Oh and I'm totally down with the hate on the English Patient. I'm with Elaine Benes: "Oh, just DIE ALREADY! WHY WON'T YOU DIE?!?!?!"
Re: Great movies that actually suck... (to you!)
I felt like I should have been paid to watch Tree of Life after suffering through it. I rose out of my seat at least 3X to walk out but stayed seated only because my son was 1 1/2 and it was a real treat for me to pop out and see a movie.
Re: Great movies that actually suck... (to you!)
John Carter. It should have been a good movie but it was too long with meaningless scenes that stretched it out. Works in a book, not so much on the big screen.

Easily one of my top five favorite movies ever. (Not that you should necessarily give a d@mn about what I think of it.)

In that case, you missed out on the action-packed feel-good sensation of the year!
(actually, no, you just saved yourself a few hours of feeling bummed out)

No!!!!!
I hated it with a passion - if ever there was a vehicle to take the twinkle out of Murray's eye and make Julie Delpy unappealing (impossible, right?) this was it.
Re: Great movies that actually suck... (to you!)
My go to on "I hate your award winning movie" is Forrest Gump. Awful awful awful movie.

What did you not like about Forest Gump? I thought everyone liked that movie.
Re: Great movies that actually suck... (to you!)
I'm loving this thread.
Can we put another spin on it .... I basically hate anything with Travolta for some reason. Horrible actor.
