Followup to post 2017...

I get a bill from RGM for my slow running Seamaster which I thought was under warranty hmmm. Turns out the charge is for de-magnetizing the watch! In all my years I've never had that happen. Fast forward to me paying for the tab over the phone. The owner of RGM answers and we strike up a conversation about how it could have happened and we chuckled over some customer stories. To my surprise, Roland cancels the charge for de-magnetizing and sends me on my way.

Again, if you need some watch work done by world class people who answer the phone I endorse RGM.

Dang, people are nice after all.

Keep that watch away from your speakers/amplifier/magnetic fields/etc. and you will not have any troubles. Some newer watches have non-metallic/ferrous main springs to deal with the issue.

I met Roland a few weeks ago when we were both in NYC for the watch shows (his visit was as a vendor/presenter of course) and he is genuine a really nice person so I am not surprised.

I find it interesting that Sinn only certifies RGM for USA warranty service. Most Sinn watches have very basic ETA or Valjoux movements which means almost any watchmaker can service them but they only certify RGM.

i actually own a watch de-mag device.

i've had my autos get mag'd a few times over the years, but i'm a power engineer, and am often around massive electrical equipment, up close and personal, so it's not too surprising.

Two ways to solve the problem for both of you. I am not usually a fan of Omega watches but that Aqua Terra 15,000 Gauss really gets my electrons flowing.

I was going to post those, but figured NYCf had it covered.

The 15k Gauss is so awesome. I remember when that came out I was trying to see if I could sell all but one bike and afford it. Nope. Still high on my list, however, as I think it’s rather important in the niche little world of timepieces.

My main issue with both of them is I do not like when they polish the center links on the bracelet (on these and their other watches). IMHO, a steel watch bracelet should either be all polished or all brushed with the only exception being the Rolex Jubilee (and president) bracelet as it looks better with the center section polished and the outer sections brushed (especially for the steel/gold models).

Oil filled cases for starters.

While doing some Christmas shopping last weekend I looked at one of these. Very nice, the silver dial looked white in person (in that lighting anyhow). Way outside my price range but nice. I'd wear one if I didn't have to pay for it haha. I didn't like the clasp though. I also feel like if my $500 Citizen has a tool-less micro adjust that can be adjusted on the fly without taking the watch off, a $5700 Omega should certainly have a similarly functioning clasp. They do have an adjustable clasp on some other watches, but you have to take the watch off to adjust it. Lame.

Isn't that a feature specifically of the SINN UX quartz watch models?

While we're at it, I have a question about jostling mechanical watches and their movements.

Would you wear your autos on a) road bikes? b) road bikes on rough roads? c)gravel bikes? d) MTB?

I wore my Seiko 5 for everything (it did gradually become too slow and beat up to deal with and I ebayed it). But every time I look down at my Yema vibrating along on my wrist whilst on my bike commute or a road-ish ride I wonder about jostling it. At 1000ft-depth rating I expect it's somehow more durable than my 100m Seiko, but I don't know how depth/pressure translates to real world durability and wear and tear on the movement. Haven't worn it on MTB!

How much do you want to spend on service (and how often)?
How much do you like/love it?

There is a point to a $50 beater watch like the most basic Casio G-Shock.

In 25 years I never babied my Rolex Explorer II 16570 (not the one shown above, that one is new, I just sold the earlier version) but I also never intentionally put it in harms way (i.e. mountain biking, cliff diving, chopping wood). It did accidentally get smacked against network racks, server racks, and into numerous things in ceilings early in my career but it was always by accident and the Explorer has some shock absorption unlike many other automatic watches.

You're probably fine road riding with it. I'd avoid mountain biking, though. And golf, but I avoid golf for other reasons too.

For years my only nice watch was a Rolex 16220 and I was in the USMC when I purchased it. I wore it doing everything....MTBing, crawling through mud, obstacle course, firing machineguns, etc. I've worn other nicer watches, usually a Speedmaster, on dirt and gravel rides numerous times.

Also, over the years many military units were issued Rolex, Blancpain, Panerai, Heuer and other watches.

My choice for MTB, trailrunning, or similar is a tough armored Casio G-Shock.
My nice automatic watches go safely in my pocket for golf or shooting guns.
Something like an Omega Seamaster is fine for roadbikes, yet is a tad heavy.

I was thinking about starting a thread for G Shocks. I’ve got 6 now. One that was delivered yesterday came straight from Japan.

John, my Seamaster never comes off unless I'm working on something mechanical like a car engine. That is one tough watch.

Interesting to hear about Sinn. Those Sinn watches are my weakness. If I were to ever get another watch it would be a wind-y Omega ;) But yeah yeah I love the minimalist look of the Sinn.

I did get a cheap degauss device, that should do it.

FWIIW there is an IOS app that will detect if your watch is magnetized. Clever bit of software. Look for "LEPSI" in the store.

They just came out with two all-titanium squares, and they're sweet, but outrageously expensive (relative to other Casio products) and a total cash grab from Casio. Can't blame 'em, folks are buying them.
