The book you just finished reading
The Railway Man https://www.amazon.com/Railway-Man-B.../dp/039334407X
This gave me a deeper appreciation how we respond to deep trauma. Author Eric Lomax never uses the phrase "PTSD" rather insightful description how he physically and mentally reacts to life after years of torture and imprisonment. Also, because of benevolent societies dedicated to the recovery of POWs he regains perspective to go on with a mostly happy life after settling the past.
There is a good story to read more than the trauma and horror that is war.
What did you just finish reading 'cause I'm looking for something to D/L to the Kindle.
Re: The book you just finished reading
I just finished reading From Bacteria To Bach And Back: The Evolution of Minds by Daniel Dennett.
Full disclosure: When I say "I just finished reading" any book by Daniel Dennett what I usually mean is "I just finished reading for the nth time" where n is some number between 2 and 6. In this case it was only the 2nd time through so it really did feel fresh.

Good good. I will D/L Bridge of Spies. I've got a family connection to the Powers story. Now that everyone is deceased it's ok. My folks were good friends with Power's USA CIA handler.

Trash talk goes public and to the thugs in the 'hood who also hold the mic, them's fightin' words. Plenty of drugs, beatdowns, and guns.

The Overstory was tremendous and I don’t read much current fiction.
Indulge me two, since I’ve been on a tear this summer.
Bad Blood. The Theranos book. A book length rehash of the story you may have already read but a fun read nevertheless. Crazy how willing people are to buy into a myth or a FOMO. The protagonist is looney tunes.
This Land by Christopher Ketcham. This book will make you angry in a good way. Exposes lots of hypocrisy in terms of “independent” people who live off the largesse of the very government they also refuse to recognize as legitimate. If the hold time at your library is too long just do yourself a favor and buy it.
Bonus reco: Virgil Wander. A quirky novel that Toots may like due to its Lake Superior/ Duluth-ish setting.
Bonus bonus reco. Returning to Earth by Jim Harrison. Maybe my favorite by him yet.
Sorry. I’ll shut up now.
Re: The book you just finished reading
The Collected Stories of Diane Williams.
Very short stories. 1-2 pp. Very well written. Bet you can’t eat just one.
Re: The book you just finished reading
"Child of the Century" by Ben Hecht, his autobiography,
Chicago newspaper man, screenwriter, wonderful story teller.
Like they say, truth is more unbelievable than fiction.
Re: The book you just finished reading
Lawrence in Arabia, by Scott Anderson
A terrific read, as well as a good primer on how we ended up where we ended up in the middle East.
Re: The book you just finished reading
Killers of the Flower Moon, by David Grann (like Steve, above.) Read it.
I also really liked The Dog Stars.
Re: The book you just finished reading
Half way thru Bridge of Spies.
Re: The book you just finished reading
(fiction) The Book of Ebenezer Le Page - G.B. Edwards - A slow burn biography of a fictional character, not sure how to put my finger on it, but the most affecting fiction I have read in may years. Also, evocative of a particular place (Guernsey) in an incredibly memorable way.
(nonfiction) Grant - Ron Chernow - Mass-market biography of Ulysses Grant. Didn't know a lot about Grant other than High School history stuff, but this is a real page turner and there are so many surprising things about Grant to discover, particularly, his savant-like military genius contrasted with his utter incapability to tell when he was being cheated.

I recently read The Overstory too and thought it was great.
I'm about 2/3 of the way through a re-read of Reamde, which is somewhat entertaining.

The Killer Angels - for the second time. The best account of the Battle of Gettysburg that I have ever read
The Last Open Road (BS Levy) - Humourous story about growing up in the 50s and wrenching on sports cars.
