Re: So I did a half marathon
Great job. Just know that the jump from half-marathon to marathon is a big one. May make more sense to take another swing at a half first.
Re: So I did a half marathon
For sure no marathon this year. There;s not much time left for proper training. Maybe another half so I can do one without walking.
Re: So I did a half marathon
Nice work. For me, running is so boring and slow, I do it as a last resort. I find my mind constantly thinking about how soon it will end. Whereas riding is when my brain relaxes and my body just does its thing. Unless I'm doing a specific workout on the bike, that's different.
A half marathon is something most active people can labor through with limited training. Full marathon is where proper training is needed for most people. Also, some people, myself included, just are not built to run 26.2 miles. My knees really suffer after 15-16 miles.
Re: So I did a half marathon
As someone who does run on occasion......great job.
Next up Canadian Ski Marathon
Did this twice.

I think that's pretty accurate. The first two weeks of my accelerated training plan were the toughest since I went from not running to doing ~20km/week. As long as your fitness was good and all you wanted to do was finish, I'd bet that doing one long run on the weekend and a mid distance run mid-week would be enough.
Re: So I did a half marathon
Nice job. I've never ran that far, most I've done is 10k. For a while a buddy and I were running together, mostly on a dirt path, a few times a week after work. But then I started having issues with my feet hurting. My cardio fitness was fine thanks to riding, and running was never a hard effort, but my running muscles and my feet just weren't used to it, so it was easy to do too much. Once my feet started hurting I was pretty much done running.
A year or so later I off-couched a 5k with a couple buddies, ran the whole thing, a hilly route, finished somewhere under 30mins, which is certainly not fast, but it was fast enough to beat my buddies and that's all I cared about.
I could barely walk for the next few days. Won't do that again!!

Re: So I did a half marathon
Congrats. running is stupid.
Last year I raised money for ALS and ran NYC to honor my Pop who was diagnosed last Feb. Training setbacks meant that the marathon was my 7th run since Aug 1. Race day a misstep at mile 11 ish to avoid one of my 75000 closest friends, I hyper-extended my knee and suffered through.
Took a proper handup from my Pop, and gave him my medal after. It was a memorable experience now where close to fun.
I'll likely run it twice more. Once when he's wheelchair bound and once in his memory.

Re: So I did a half marathon
i ran a mile last night to get to my buddy's place on time. my hip hurts today. a half-marathon would devastate me i'm sure. good on y'all
(presumably bursitis hip pain due to tight hammies and IT band..might as well add tight quads to the mix too because that's the truth.)
Re: So I did a half marathon
Way to go Shoogs.
Summilox, I get it you don't have to make excuses. My running "illness" presents it's ugly head when snow flies and I run on a treadmill because I do not have the common sense to pace myself otherwise and would run out of my shoes 'cuase it feels so good.
Re: So I did a half marathon
Thanks. It's amazing what a driven mind can push you to do...
Summilux- Congrats again.
Re: So I did a half marathon
When I ran I think I found half marathons the hardest. Too short to be endurance, too long to be speed. So they end up being both and by the end I'd start really questioning why I did that kind of thing and it didn't matter because I was way back of the front anyway.
Re: So I did a half marathon
Nicely done. Heat can be a killer.
Surgery on my left foot in '07, and the same symptoms showing up in my right mean that any running (and hence all my PRs) are well behind me. Plus side -- I have ti hardware that goes with me where ever I go.

Re: So I did a half marathon
Congrats on doing the half!!!
I've been gradually running more over the last 2 years, but it has been primarily trail races. I have an itch to complete a 50K ultra. I have no idea how the rare breed of human can complete those 100 milers.

Re: So I did a half marathon
Nice efforts you guys!
I have been drifting towards a running focus for most of the year. First time I haven't had an injury so I'm happy. I'm gradually working up to longer trail runs but both the 50 and the 100 are still way off... I'm just having a hell of a good time out there...
Re: So I did a half marathon
I started running again last week and my lower quads are killing me. Completely locked up.
I have an age-40 goal of running a fast 5K and doing a few five mile trail races. Figure while the kids are small and I have shorter snatches of time to get my exercise in then I should set some goals and make it fun for myself.
Re: So I did a half marathon
Congrats on completing that, sounds like you had the strong will to push through the conditions etc. I did a half marathon when I was about 30, after one of my friends said he was 'definitely doing it' and I should too. The furthest I ran in training was 7 miles, at which point I figured that was enough to carry on to the event. My friend quit after completing one of two laps of the course, complaining he'd eaten too much breakfast, and leaving me to finish alone. I was two seconds under two hours which was rather lucky!
Ten years later and I've started doing sprint distnace tri's (0.8k swim/20k bike/5k run). Running after cycling is particularly weird. I'm not sure being a cyclist is at all conducive to helping with running.
