Snow

Meh.

Just spent time I will not get back standing in line at the local froo froo grocery getting milk and anchovies because we haven't been home and we have pasta in the cupboard and tomatoes so I'll make a kind of spaghetti agile olio pepperoncino with anchovies because I just read where that is the secret ingredient and then probably we'll get something from the bakery tomorrow morning and a lunch somewhere and while out pick up something for dinner or just make mushroom risotto with some dried porcini from Italy and it will all be fine because no matter what I have always been able to find food in NYC even after Sandy when my wife had to have her coffee with condensed milk there was still condensed milk and coffee.

I just feel sorry for people like the old lady in the Home Depot who was loading her cart up with Dura-Flame logs because that's probably how she is heating her house. And perhaps cooking. I hope she has a fireplace. We are lucky people.

We are fortunate and there are really good folks who look out for others.

My hood is full of young ones who volunteer to shovel for those who can not...for instance.

Yeah, people are good for the most part. When push comes to shove.

I've managed to shovel the walk enough so my dog had someplace to do her business. She is now porpoising around the yard like a fool.

Grilled burgers for dinner last night plus a load of chicken thighs to be used in whatever we cook for the rest of the weekend.

Not a single solitary dendrite up here where we're supposed to get it. What a travesty of a winter.

I'm going to guess there's a foot down so far, though it's hard to know for sure with all the drifting. There's a 3.5 ft drift in my backyard.

Made a big breakfast and now the gang is chilling on their various electronic devices. Too windy to shovel yet.

I like (sarcasm) how every weather event is now a "Storm of the Century." It was damn near 70 degrees a couple of weeks ago. It had to snow eventually. Yet it seems our society is programmed to go to pieces at the first little inconvenience.

De Blasio just declared Martial Law at 2:30.

Oh wait. No he just said no non-emergency vehicles on the streets of Manhattan after 2:30PM.

Speaking of trying to look like something, Gov. Cuomo declared NYS a disaster area. Okay fine, but what does that have to do with the snow?

We are going to make cream of asparagus soup and some olive bread toast. I know that makes the cow and a half pictured above sound like meager pickings in comparison, but that's how we roll. Dee Lux.

edit: The best thing that happened so far was that earlier the snow was getting blown straight onto our apartment windows, whereupon it melted immediately, washing away the built up grime and dirt deposit created by all the construction on our street. Now we can actually see the snow outside. Nice. And our neighbor across the way who likes to walk around his apartment naked all the time. Not nice.

No clouds, no rain, no snow here in Baja. Fresh shrimp on a bed of organic Heirloom Tomatoes tonight if I don't catch any fish today.

Stu's clear sidewalks + abundance of food = dinner at his place.

I still have low visibility here - can't even see the end of the block. Not going to touch the shoveling until it stops, maybe tomorrow morning. In the mean time have just cut and bled my first set of disc brakes (major props to the lbc for just lending me the tools to do it yesterday!), have built a robot with the boy, am helping put the final touches on the pinewood derby and am doing my best to eat an entire pot of vegan goulash. A couple hours on the trainer tonight--the shoveling can wait.

So glad we sold our 1800sqft NJ home and downsized to a 750sqft rental high rise apartment in Boston.
No home = no shoveling. Did it for ten years. Do not miss it one bit.

Sitting on the couch with wifey watching movies. Love lazy Saturdays (and Sundays).

It's a good afternoon to sip a drink, do some reading and listen to some music. I hope everyone is enjoying hunkering down for the duration.

One of my favorite parts of snowstorms this heavy was them necessitating getting up on the roof to remove all the extra weight. Or at least that task was eventually gotten around to after a few hours of jumping off into head high drifts.

Of course the Russians have taken this to new levels of inner city Winter fun. Don't say I recommended this but take video if you do.

I just came in from shoveling for two hours. It's the first time in many years of apt renting (where we were responsible for the sidewalks and driveway) and home ownership where I decided it's not worth it to worry about the sidewalk. There's just no place to put the stuff without hauling it, which is crappy for the back and demoralizing. I have better stuff to do with my time than disperse snow around my property. The snow was up to my thigh in some spots.

But tomorrow will bring snowshoeing and sledding!!

There are all sorts of videos of Russians doing crazy, often dumb, things. They're at least as bad as Americans!

Well, BWI, JFK and LGA have officially had their largest snowstorms ever recorded. Central Park may too. So for all the times we've heard "storm of the century" over the past 15 years, this one may actually fit the bill.

Amazingly sharp gradient to the snowfall as you go inland though. My mom in the lower hudson valley only had an inch or so, just 60 miles north of the City.
