Cyclus 1-1/8" head tube reamer/facer
I'm going to purchase Cyclus 1-1/8" head tube reamer/facer, but they have two different sizes available and I'm not sure which one to get.
720210 is for 33.8mm ID and 720006 is for 34mm ID. Chris King has 33.9mm ID recommendation for their 1-1/8" headsets. I measured my Chris King headset and it's 34.06mm OD, so 33.8mm reamer is definitely too tight for their recommendation, but will 34mm then be too loose?
I'm happy with the quality of the Cyclus 44mm reamer/facer, so I'd like to get 1-1/8" reamer also from the Cyclus and they fit nicely in my budget.
Re: Cyclus 1-1/8" head tube reamer/facer
Don't know much about about the HT reamer, but I can say if your hole is 34mm and your part is 34mm it will still be a press fit. I press my bearings in my Automated machinery at 0.001" undersized. 0.06mm is 0.002" press. Any lower than that and you are going to have some serious difficulty pressing that in and you will experience deformation either on the cup or the HT.
Re: Cyclus 1-1/8" head tube reamer/facer
I have the 72006 reamer and it makes a loose interference fit with a Chris King headset; you could almost push the cups in by hand. So far this seems to cause no problems in stainless steel headtubes, no experience with any other material.
Re: Cyclus 1-1/8" head tube reamer/facer
Thanks Mark, that's exactly the info i was looking for. How do you like the quality of the 720006?
Too bad there's no good alternatives price wise available and no local shops to go to get reaming/facing done.
Re: Cyclus 1-1/8" head tube reamer/facer
Well it's not Campagnolo but it seems OK to me, seems to cut round and square without difficulty even on stainless which is notorious for work hardening under the tool. Time will tell how long it lasts.
Like any tool cutting stainless, up the feed rate and lower the tool speed, eg use a fair amount of pressure and cut slowly.
Re: Cyclus 1-1/8" head tube reamer/facer
Thanks for the info Mark! Have you tried it with other headsets, like Cane Creek?
Re: Cyclus 1-1/8" head tube reamer/facer
Sorry, no, welded on to Chris King as I think they are reasonably priced for the quality and I like his environmental and social awareness.
Re: Cyclus 1-1/8" head tube reamer/facer
Little update on this, I bought the reamer/facer and I have used it once now.
King headset is almost slip fit, but you still need to use the headset press to press cups in.
Quality of the reamer/facer is great for the money, I bought mine from Bike-Discount.de.
Re: Cyclus 1-1/8" head tube reamer/facer
Can I ask, did you use again since then? any experience with other headsets? I bought one yesterday. I plant to take this to a tool sharpener company and take down a little bit from the diameter.
Re: Cyclus 1-1/8" head tube reamer/facer
just ordered mine,
however i have a feeling that the cutter may take a slight detour to the tool grinders to be reduced a shade, will probably come back sharper than they are new anyway, so a bonus :)

Re: Cyclus 1-1/8" head tube reamer/facer
I have done three frames so far with it, all of them with the Chris king headsets.
No problems, the fit is slightly loose, but I still need to use headset press to install the cups.
