Dropout thickness for Sram
I appologize if this has been asked before but a search turned up zilch.
I see that paragon sells an insert to build up a steel dropout for use with sram deraileurs.
Is this something that a nice stainless washer woud work as well for?
What is the need for the extra thickness?
I'm baffled.
Thanks,
Jake

build it up for what reason atmo?

Exactly!
but this is clipped from the site;
This bushing will increase the thickness of 1/4" (6.35 mm) thick derailleur tabs to 7.5 mm. This is particularly important for SRAM derailleurs that have a dropout thickness tolerance of 7 to 8 mm. Made from 303 stainless steel, it can be silvered into any of our steel or stainless steel dropouts. It will not work for any other material. This bushing is also a solution for any steel or stainless steel dropout with a stripped thread. In either case, drill the dropout to 7/16" diameter for proper fit of the bushing

this is clipped from (my) life:
i didn't get the memo atmo.
Re: Dropout thickness for Sram
I had a problem with a stainless dropout/sram derailleur combo--dropped a chainring spacer behind the derailleur and it worked peachy king...
Re: Dropout thickness for Sram
I know someone who has put two SRAM derailleurs into the spokes even though the adjustment screw is maxed out. I was going to suggest he put a washer behind it, but events got in the way.

That still is incompetence of the person installing the derailleur
as they did not notice the derailleur was over traveling, they just relied on the index
and did not check the travel
No empathy here
Re: Dropout thickness for Sram
agreed Dazza.
My problem was at the other end of the corncob. It wouldn't consistently drop from the 12 to the 11. Apparently sram derailleurs are made to work best with modern carbon/alloy dropouts. The outside of cassette to outside of dropout dimension was lacking. Problem disappeared instantly once the spacer spaced the derailleur out.

Thanks for the info, I think I'll flesh it out ahead of time.

Re: Dropout thickness for Sram
Is this only a SRAM thing, or is a 7-8 mm. dropout thickness also preferable for Campy or Shimano?

I've worked through the same issues on a steel frame with SRAM.
Re: Dropout thickness for Sram
Yup. Same here. Little spacer worked great getting to the last cog.
Wade, I haven't run into the same problem with either Shimano or Campagnolo. The spring pulls tight even at the end of the travel (closest to the small cog).
