Re: harry potter ---- never the final episode ....
book six; love the Voldemort history.
Re: harry potter ---- never the final episode ....
I don't think I have a favorite and we've watched them a hundred times as a family. We'll be at the theatre on the 17th.
Re: harry potter ---- never the final episode ....
I think I liked the first couple because they were more fun. As the story developed it got more serious, and while I enjoyed them as well, the first ones made me smile more. I will be bummer when it's over, though.
Re: harry potter ---- never the final episode ....
I like them all, the movie with Dolores Umbridge, the Order of the Phoenix was however my least favorite movie, they made her too hate-able and the movie all together too dark. But they let that director go and got a good one for the Half Blood Prince. Definitely a lighter tone in that one.
If you haven't heard the books on tape, you are missing out! The reader Jim Dale does a fantastic job.

Re: harry potter ---- never the final episode ....
I love the stories, literally have read each several times and look forward to being able to read them to my daughter as she gets older. There is so much good in the stories that most children can relate. I was sad the series ended, but I respect the heck out of JK Rowling and look forward the movies. I have waited in line until midnight to get the last book and for the last 5 books read then in 24 hours each. Simply enjoy the writing and the poor boy who found the light.
I however am unable to read any of the books to my students as it is not PC. Remember when teachers, were not evil pedophile, glue sniffing, satanic candy pushers?

No. I remember when teachers were Evil, Pedophile, Glue Sniffing (or pot smoking at least) satanic candy pushers and WE LIKED IT
Re: harry potter ---- never the final episode ....
I like book 6 and 7 the most.
Re: harry potter ---- never the final episode ....
The books were a guilty pleasure that I steadily felt less guilty about as book followed book. My favorite book, by far, is "The Deathly Hallows". I'm not a Christian, and that story got me as close to understanding that essential idea - of some great individual whose sacrifice could save the world - as anything I've experienced. I read that book in two sittings, and immediately started it again. I am so impressed, too, that Rowling was able to deliver such a tour de force with the entire fucking world looking over her shoulder. (Except for the hideous epilogue. WTF was she thinking?)
The series is a classic of children's lit, and will be with us a long, long time I think.
"The Prisoner of Azkaban" is probably my favorite of the movies so far. The first two are at the bottom of the heap. Chris Columbus is a hack.
I won't be in the theater opening weekend, but my daughter and I will see pt. 1 of the Deathly Hallows by Thanksgiving. (She saw the first film with her 3rd grade classmates. She'll be in college when the pt. 2 comes out next year.)

Funny - I thought Dolores, and the whole clampdown, was too light in the movie. Children, this is what fascism looks like: It should have been suffocating.
Re: harry potter ---- never the final episode ....
i would get more enjoyment out of reading the back of a shampoo bottle than reading that drivel. it is to literature what a walmart full-suspension bike is to cycling.
no accounting for taste, but i do believe you can account for quality in literature.

Re: harry potter ---- never the final episode ....
i have never picked up a HP book or even fumbled across one of the movies.

This, coming from a misanthrope that read Kierkegaard at age 8.
Re: harry potter ---- never the final episode ....
i read them when I had a colleague look at me as if I was Rumpelstiltskin waking up when I said I hadn't heard of the stuff. I liked some of the books better than others. The movies have never really been that awesome to me as I find books to be better in general.
My favorite parts of different books involved the Dementors. The movies DID do a good job of depicting those things.

See a kid fall in love with the story, especially one who hates to read or cannot pull himself/herself away from the TV. See children discuss what happens in the stories with each other instead of the TV, video games, sports. You are incredibly gifted in cycling knowledge I grant you that. You have experiences and skills I will never have nor even come close to understanding. However, take charge of a classroom, not for a day like good old Oprah, a year, maybe 5, maybe 10 and see the difference this particular book series makes. No one claims it to be Chauser, Whitman, or even e.e.cummings. But the impact it has had world wide in and out of the classroom speaks volumes of the efectiveness and genuine charm of the books. It is a story written for children who grow up with the characters. Adults and young people sharing a common bond with written words finding more of a connection then you can possibly imagine is remarkable. No it is not the end all be all, but it hits home with many kids and adults too. For that and the pure entertainment of it I say it works. Maybe I am naive as I live in the bubble of education and might have skewed points. However, I see it work and as exciting as shampoo bottle might be while in the shower, I say read them all and find nothign good about any of it. if you have and can find nothing worthy then that makes me sad. However, to each their own and I know I can stick to the awesome advice you give on cycling. I do think you do a hell of a job there.

and a bike is a bike is a bike and i'd rather see a kid or an adult pedaling around on an mgx from walmart than eating dorittos. the difference is that literature as entertainment doesn't need to be infantile or poorly written or easy. there is great literature written for children out there- harry potter just isn't it. i honestly believe books like this stunt mental development and turn kids off of reading and learning latter in life. we can and should do better.
i have no problem with guilty pleasures- but like a big mac shouldn't be compared to the steak alain ducasse would cook- you can't compare harry potter to a real work of literature.
Re: harry potter ---- never the final episode ....
But that isn't what I was saying. I think real literature, whatever you chose to define it teaches more then HP does. Sure I totally buy that, however the desire for some to read is low, finding something, anything that captures their interest can be difficult. The books are not sold as quality works of literature, which is why you find them in scholastic readers. However, their appeal to many is powerful. The story itself stands strong, the writing, maybe not.
They may be walmart type books to you, but not everyone can afford or appreciate one of your bikes. Not all minds capture quality, which is why we have Snookie and The Situation.

i call bullshit on that. all minds can capture quality and the fact of the matter is books, unlike bicycles are not priced according to quality. literature is for everyone; great literature even more so.
Re: harry potter ---- never the final episode ....
well I guess we have to agree to disagree, not all minds are the same. Kids (people) learn differently, I am speaking in that arena with this. Disabilities aside, some do not learn or are able to learn through reading. Quality is subjective and I think means different things to different people. You and I obviously have different versions. Yes books are priced in quality, from the simplest thought of paperback to hardback to hard to find rare books and textbooks. Again, quality is definable per person.

But what are we arguing here. HP and it's value to the world of literature. Grand scheme, made JK a billionarie and makes folks happy. Well, most folks, not all.
