Default Our Boys in West By Gawd: REPORT!!!!

Great ride with a stalwart Vsalon team at the Rapha ride in West By Gawd this weekend.
Hella good work. Let's hear a report.

A humbling heap of heat stress.

We started first and on the way down from the inn, a fellow competitor (40 minutes late for the pre-race meeting) driving an SUV at slightly sub-NASCAR speed coming up the course, granted us a little too much room and put his Mercedes in a ditch.

Steve laid it down on a hairpin right, just 8 miles in. He said he'd just continue for as long as he could.

The third and most crucial rest stop was a gas station the burned down this week. Closed. We got directions to a spring in a cave but could not find it. We went door-to-door begging for water.

We rode like escaped felons. On a couple of ludicrously steep sections, we walked like a chain gang.

Do not doubt the resolve of the Rat Pack. We persevered.

    Wow. What a weekend.

Before the event Steve said we didn't have a chance of winning. I told Steve I'll find another
rider if he wants to think that way. I realize that this wasn't a race. But it was.

Other teams had Cat1 riders that were selfish and didn't stick together. Some teams had a rider
that couldn't handle it. Dozen's just simple couldn't finished the ride.

We did ok for a few vSalon nerds.

It was a left. I think the same turn that Alex Grabau did the same thing in. I used to race with Alex back in the day.

Second place. 82 riders either finished behind or DNF'ed. And they looked a helluva a lot more chipper than we did at the finish. Chapeau to the Rapha Women!

Interesting! I know Alex from when he used to run Dent Sport Garage and ran Ramana Lagemann's cars in rallying.

So cool, had no idea this was happening. Inspirational! W. Va. is totally cool, used to visit grandma in Charleston during Summers as a kid. It can get hot, and it sounds like it did for you guys.

I think this was the hardest thing I've done on a bike. The route was really nice and fast till about mile 86 where you had to climb from VA back over to WV. This turned in to mostly a hike over that mountain. I was really concerned about being able to finish at this point. Luckily from all my riding with Darren these past two years I've learned quitting isn't an option. This was probably even more of a mental challenge than physical.

I don't race bikes so I told myself going into this it wasn't a race. Did I want to do well and possibly finish with the fastest time sure but I also didn't want to let myself down. We gave it our all out there and worked together the whole time to keep the pace fast when it made sense and this paid off.

I'm happy I was able to be a part of it and was in the company of 3 dudes that stuck together and made sure we all got to the end. Today my body still hurts in ways it never has and it brings a smile to my face. Would do it again in a heart beat.

    Well done boys!

Now lets hear about the equipment used. Who was riding what, any issues, etc?

Four pairs of DT Swiss hubs. Four pairs of Shimano pedals. Four pairs of Panaracer tires (three under the Compass name). Brakes: four discs, two calipers, and two mini-vees.

One flat (pre-existing condition). One handlebar plug liberated and recovered.

Water bottles (Signature Cycles-branded Purist) performed as intended. Saddle bags, handlebar bag, spare tire, and tool roll stayed secure. The only CO2 expended was from bodily orifices.

This whole thing comes across as the most rock n roll thing I've seen from four dudes wearing matching Assos kit.

Maybe even a little punk rock.

Everyone once in a while VeeSalon provides some inspiration... This is one of those times.

    Sooo nasty, but sooo gratifying.

The only one of us that I never saw completely off and doubled over his bike, you know, like bent at the hips at 90 degrees, staring at the ground in defeat barely able to hold yourself up doubled over? Yep, you guessed it-- Todd Holland.

I suspect that is because he rode away from the three of us when he knew we had stopped to do the same on the 2nd to last climb, and then probably did it too. He's just too pro to let anyone else see it.

Oh, and at the top of the final climb he used his dick to carve an inspirational message into the dirt TDF style for the rest of us.

    4 horsemen of the a-fukin-pocalypse

PS, I would like to volunteer to have the baby of any of the 4 Rapha women's team that finished right behind us, and easily out-drank and out-classed us.

I have a sinking feeling that monster is being created...

~3 weeks ago I witnessed Todd doing a ride that was 107 miles and 12,000 ft of climbing. Of which 80+ miles were dirt.
Last week he did this Rapha ride.
    Up-coming is d2r2.

And the guy is more than half century old and too nice.

Everybody has now been warned. There is something not right here...

    The worst part?
He beats me down the dirt roads descents and doesn't even have disc brakes!

    The best part?
After D2R2, he's joining Justin and I for the ride back to Greenwich.

The "enhancement" program has all been spelled out in previous posts.
