I like it- fignon did it in his last stage win up la saleve near Geneva.
Racers have been doing it forever- and it requires you to stop and get off and then get back on and then catch the group again... Not as easy as it sounds.

Either way it sounds like contador suffered some damage to his bike (brakes rubbing) and he still made it through.

If you didn't see it, or haven't heard, he often changes bikes in the middle of the stage
like before a climb, or today when he hops on a "cobble" bike.

I personally don't like it. Not sure how you'd prevent it with the rules,
but it strikes me as against the spirit of why we have mixed terrain stages
in the first place, which is about compromising optimal conditions,
something the makes it more difficult for the specialist. Thoughts?

I'm ok with bike changes. I do find it interesting that Contador is such a fan--maybe it's a mental boost as well.

Come on, he just won a stage *and* the yellow jersey. One can only have so much luck in a day.

Tony looked quite excited after that win. That was a pretty good smile he was sporting crossing the line. Given that, and not posting up, I don't think he was really expecting it last.

Tony saw that leaving his yellow jersey acquisition to Cav's efforts was fruitless, so he took matters into his own hands. A great win.

Bike changes are fun and make sense too. There was 180k on the road before the cobbles there so it also makes perfect sense.

Martin pretty spectacular, in particular given the fact that he was on a team mate's bike that was way too small for him

For everyone dumping on Cav, recognize that the difference could have just as easily been 2 seconds in the prologue that Tony should have dug just a tiny bit deeper.

Cav should have pedaled longer, Martin should have pushed those prologue turns a bit harder...it's a game of inches, but not all those inches are Cav's. He was out there working today and has just as much responsibility for Tony's delayed yellow as anyone else on that team...including Martin.

with brakes reversed from his usual setup - nervy stuff at the end of a stage in the bunch, to say nothing of those turns at the end.... he said in the interview that he was pretty focused on using the appropriate ratio.

(dunno which way his are routed, and don't care enough to look it up in photos)

okay - I lied - went and looked it up - seems Tony routes 'moto'... eeeesh, like I needed more reasons to man crush on him.

    HOLY cow, great stage.
Kinda glad it did not rain which made for razors edge racing without too much carnage.

The story on cycling news made it sound like contador was slowed down by the switch- maybe he will have 2nd thoughts next go around.

Makes me wonder how different a roubaix is to a Tarmac in terms of fit for contador to want to switch bikes twice- if I read that right??
